Soda-anthraquinone pulping optimization of oil palm empty fruit bunch

Abstract: The influence of soda-anthraquinone (AQ) pulping conditions on paper properties of oil palm empty fruit bunches was studied using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) based on Central Composite Design (CCD). The alkali charge, NaOH (A), pulping temperature (T), and pulping time (t) ranged between 20 and 30%, 160 and 180 °C, and 60 and 120 minutes, respectively. The mechanical properties evaluated for the handsheets produced were the tensile index, tearing index, bursting index, folding endurance, zero-span tensi… Show more

“…The simultaneous effects of NaOH ( X 1 ) and EDTA ( X 2 ) charges were further investigated using response surface methodology with central composite design as in Table 3 . This design was greatly used for the evaluation of pulping process at a reduced number of experimental runs ( Berhanu et al., 2018 ; Brahim et al., 2017 ; Hassan et al., 2020 ). Responses values as in pulp yield ( Y P ), lignin removal ( Y L ), and cellulose yield ( Y C ) are also rendered in the last three columns.…”

“…Therefore, after lignin removal, it stopped the chromophore's ability to absorb light. 48 However, the pattern of kappa number did not follow the brightness value for soda and kraft pulpings. In an earlier report, a significant difference was observed in the paper brightness of the AQ-added in Punica granatum.…”

“…Hassan et al 48 used soda-AQ, which is more environmental friendly process compared to kraft pulping to determine the optimum pulping for oil palm empty fruit bunch. Compared to soda-AQ pulps, kraft pulps generally have lower pulp yields.…”
