Soft Elastomeric Capacitor for Angular Rotation Sensing in Steel Components

Abstract: The authors have previously proposed corrugated soft elastomeric capacitors (cSEC) to create ultra compliant scalable strain gauges. The cSEC technology has been successfully demonstrated in engineering and biomechanical applications for in-plane strain measurements. This study extends work on the cSEC to evaluate its performance at measuring angular rotation when installed folded at the junction of two plates. The objective is to characterize the sensor’s electromechanical behavior anticipating applications t… Show more

“…Numerical simulations conducted in a prior study [31] verified that up to 93.6% of the total elastic strain deformation (ε x,c ) in the sensor is distributed around the sensing area that is in contact with the curved corner under angular rotationinduced bending deformation. The electromechanical model of the cSEC under angular rotation deformation can be derived from the strain occurring along the arc length of the corner.…”

“…The sensing properties of cSEC under angular rotationinduced bending strain were characterized on a hollow steel section (HSS) (i.e. no weld) in [31]. Here, work is extended by creating the HSS by joining two L-shaped sections via a fillet web.…”
