Soft mobile robots driven by foldable dielectric elastomer actuators

Abstract: A cantilever beam with elastic hinge pulled antagonistically by two dielectric elastomer (DE) membranes in tension forms a foldable actuator if one DE membrane is subject to a voltage and releases part of tension. Simply placing parallel rigid bars on the prestressed DE membranes results in enhanced actuators working in a pure shear state. We report design, analysis, fabrication, and experiment of soft mobile robots that are moved by such foldable DE actuators. We describe systematic measurement of the foldabl… Show more

“…Recent work has sought to use these materials for soft robotic locomotion (Fig. 2i) because of their fast response times and low power requirements [63][64][65][66][67][68] (Table 1). Underwater, the weight is balanced by the buoyant force and the water can be used as an electric ground, thereby enabling high payload 64 and even untethered swimming 65 .…”

“…In the field of DE, one of the main goals is to develop highperformance DEAs. Based on the working principle, various configurations of DEAs are designed for extensive applications, such as planar, [58][59][60][61][62][63][64][65][66] multilayer stacked, [26,27,[67][68][69][70][71] folded, [72,73] rolled, [24,[74][75][76][77][78] diamond, [79][80][81] bending, [82][83][84][85][86] zipping, [87] balloon, [22,23,[88][89][90][91][92][93] cone-shaped, [94][95][96][97][98][99][100][101] hinge, [102...…”

“…The possibility of manufacturing DEAs with planar geometry makes them useful to obtain foldable robots. An example was reported by (Sun et al 2016), although it was a wheeled robot, which therefore didn't mimic any natural solution and so it is not discussed here.…”
