Soft robot design methodology for ‘push-button’ manufacturing

Abstract: Push-button' or fully automated manufacturing would enable the production of robots with zero intervention from human hands. Realizing this utopia requires a fundamental shift from a sequential (design-materials-manufacturing) to a concurrent design methodology.

“…With each of our observations, a consistent, unexplored pattern of sensitivity to the Rayleigh velocity of the material emerges. As soft materials are finding increasing applicability in robotics, 1,20 these effects may become relevant, particularly for tasks where robotic systems must rapidly form contact with their surroundings, such as locomotion through complex environments. Given the dramatic effect of impact velocity on the contact area, frictional grip and stability could even be modulated by altering the rate at which a 'foot' initiates contact with a surface, leading to modified control strategies for locomotion.…”

“…The flight time is also affected by the pulse width of laser, the decay and distortion caused by atmospheric transmission, the influence of reflected target and optical receiving system on the pulse broadening and the accuracy of timing circuit. In general, in order to reduce drift error and time jitter, narrow pulse laser and appropriate pulse identification unit will be selected [15][16].…”
