Soft tissue sarcomas of the extremities and trunk in the adult

Abstract: Between 1970 and 1988 surgery was performed on 124 patients with soft tissue sarcomas of the extremities and trunk in the University Clinics of Hamburg. Liposarcoma, malignant fibrous histiocytoma, fibrosarcoma and malignant schwannoma were the most common histological types. High-grade sarcomas (G3) predominated, with 41%, while 26% were graded G2 and 33% G1. Resection with wide margins all round was achieved in only 54% of the patients. The quality of the operation proved to be only therapy-related prognosti… Show more

“…The majority of distant metastases (about 75%) occurred within the ®rst 2 years (Lindberg et al 1981;Zornig et al 1992b;Abbas et al 1981). In a previous study we felt that late metastasization could be linked to multiple local recurrences with continuous tumour growth in the patient (Zornig et al 1992b). This was not con®rmed here.…”

“…It must be pointed out that there were also two G1 tumours and 4 T1 tumours that metastasized. The commonest site of the ®rst manifestation of metastatic spread is the lungs, with about 80%, while metastasis to the liver, bone and skin is less frequent (Lindberg et al 1981;Bramwell et al 1985;Zornig et al 1992b;Abbas et al 1981;Markhede et al 1982). “…However, at the second procedure, it was an R2 resection because tumour tissues were macroscopically obvious along the spine. In patients with sarcoma of the extremities and trunk, the 5-year survival rate is 57% and 15% for R0/1 and R2 resections, respectively [8]. The clinical condition of our patient was very poor before the last resection.…”

“…Sin embargo en nuestra experiencia una mayor edad (mayor de 40 años) y la localización fueron factores determinantes que tuvieron impacto en la sobrevida. Además como lo han señalado otros autores (30,34,36,58) fueron factores que influyeron en la sobrevida: el estado ganglionar, el estado clínico, grado de diferenciación celular, metástasis a distancia, tipo histológico y tipo de tratamiento empleado.…”
