Soft X-ray emission from molybdenum plasmas generated by dual laser pulses

Abstract: We demonstrate efficient enhancement of soft X-ray (SXR) emission from molybdenum plasmas produced using dual pulse irradiation, in which 10-ns and 150-ps pre-pulses were followed by a 150-ps main pulse. The number of photons was observed to be 5.3 × 1016 photons/sr, which corresponded to a conversion efficiency of 1.5%/sr in λ = 2.34–4.38 nm region at a pulse separation time of 1 ns with the 150-ps pre-pulse. The conversion efficiency became 1.3 times as large as that produced by a single pulse. The results i… Show more

“…One of such methods can be double-pump medium excitation, which is often used for spectral analysis, X-ray generation and plasma studies [11][12][13]. In THz science, this technique has demonstrated its effectiveness for increasing the output power of THz radiation.…”

“…Whilst in recent years enhanced effort has directed on large-scale facilities such as synchrotrons, free electron lasers and extreme light infrastructure beamlines for soft x-ray and extreme ultraviolet (XUV) research, such sources are still not always readily available for easy access by the research community. At the laboratory scale, plasma sources, either discharge or laser produced, can be adopted for applications in water-window imaging [1], extreme ultraviolet metrology [2] and emission/absorption spectroscopy [3]. Although the development of discharge-based XUV sources has progressed well in the last decade these still exhibit lifetime issues concerning possible repetitive usage.…”

“…influence of a prepulse in the X-ray generation has been proved in several experiments (see for example [35][36][37][38][39][40][41][42][43]). The observed enhancement is related with the increased coupling of the stronger second laser pulse with an expanding plasma -created by the first weaker pulse-from the target surface.…”
