Hydrogels are three-dimensional cross-linked stable network insoluble in water, which gives them a remarkable capacity to absorb both water and biological fluids. Hydrogel has been synthesized from natural or synthetic polymers and/or monomers, which have made tremendous advancements in many different applications. Composite hydrogel is a type of hydrogel prepared by grafting hydrophilic groups, such as hydroxyl (–OH), carboxylic acid (–COOH), imide (–CONH), sulfonic acid (–SO3H), amine (–NH2), and amide (–CONH2), into the polymer chain’s backbone and adding some additives such as kaolin, zeolite, or even different types of nanoparticles. Whereas the polymeric composite hydrogels exhibit stimuli for different properties such as pH, temperature, or light, which may affect swelling, mechanical properties, and self-healing, which in turn play vital roles in different areas. Hence, numerous efforts have been made to synthesize polymer-based composited hydrogels via physical or chemical crosslinking techniques to enhance their physiochemical, biological, and many other properties. Many researchers are currently paying attention to hydrogels and their applications, including wastewater treatment and purification, medical and biomedical applications, agricultural applications, and many other industrial applications. The aim of this review is to summarize the classification of composite hydrogels based on their chemical and physical crosslinking techniques, in addition to the different polymers and additives used to prepare composite hydrogels. Furthermore, the impact of hydrogel on health and the environment has been discussed. Other significant issues were also presented, including the challenges that face hydrogel production and application, which have been discussed.

The prevalence of chronic wounds is increasing owing to the expanding population and the growing number of individuals suffering from diabetes. Such a chronic wound continues to be a significant healthcare burden for diabetic patients because it frequently carries a high chance of limb loss due to amputation and reduces survival as a result. Development of innovative wound dressing materials with the potential to stop bacterial infections and accelerate the process of tissue regeneration is needed to increase the effectiveness of diabetic wound healing. In the current study, a co-polymerization process based on a free radical reaction was used to create a hydrogel of polysaccharides blend graft acrylamide (PsB-g-Am). Starch, chitosan, and alginate make up the polysaccharides blend (PsB). The produced hydrogel’s structure was characterized using FTIR spectroscopy. The antibacterial activities of silver nanoparticles synthesized through the green method using garlic bulb (Allium sativum) is reported. The silver nanoparticles’ physical characteristics were examined using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy analysis, and UV-visible spectroscopy and they were found to range in size from 50 to 100 nm. The agar well diffusion technique is used to investigate the antibacterial characteristics. Inclusion of silver nanoparticles in the hydrogels demonstrated concentration-dependent antibacterial behavior against Gram-negative Klebsiella pneumoniae and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus during antimicrobial testing of the hydrogels. When hydrogels were applied to diabetic mice, the system was examined for its healing abilities, and positive therapeutic results were obtained in as little as 14 days. Thus, it can be inferred that graft copolymer of chitosan-AgNPs hydrogels can promote healing in chronic wounds over time and can be utilized as an alternative to conventional therapies for chronic wounds (such as those brought on by diabetes) in mouse models.

There is an increasing need to find cost-effective and sustainable solutions for treating wastewater from contaminants of emerging concern (CECs). In this regard, cape gooseberry husk� typically an agri-food waste�is investigated for the first time as a potential biosorbent for the removal of model pharmaceutical contaminants of caffeine (CA) and salicylic acid (SA) from water. Three different preparations of husks were investigated and characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer−Emmett−Teller analysis, zeta potential, and point of zero charge measurements. The activation of the husk led to an increase in the surface area, pore volume, average pore size, and adsorption favorability. The single-component adsorption of SA and CA onto the three husks was investigated at different initial concentrations and pH values to determine the optimal operating conditions. The maximal removal efficiencies of SA and CA reached up to 85 and 63%, respectively, for the optimal husk which also offers a less energy-intensive option in its activation. This husk also exhibited high rates of adsorption that exceeded other husk preparations by up to four times. It was proposed that CA interacts electrostatically with the husk, while SA binds through weak physical interactions (e.g., van der Waals and H-bonding). In binary systems, CA adsorption was highly favored over SA adsorption, owing to its electrostatic interactions. The selectivity coefficients α SA CA varied with initial concentration and ranged between 61 and 627. The regeneration of husk was also successful resulting in its re-use for up to four full consecutive cycles, further demonstrating the efficiency of cape gooseberry husk use in wastewater treatment.
