Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have become increasingly important in assisting 5G and beyond 5G (B5G) mobile networks. Indeed, UAVs have all the potentials to both satisfy the ever-increasing mobile data demands of such mobile networks and provide ubiquitous connectivity to different kinds of wireless devices. However, the UAV assistance paradigm faces a set of crucial issues and challenges. For example, the network management of current UAV-assisted systems is time consuming, complicated, and carried out manually, thus causing a multitude of interoperability issues. To efficiently address all these issues, Software-Defined Network (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) are two promising technologies to efficiently manage and improve the UAV assistance for the next generation of mobile networks. In the literature, no clear guidelines are describing the different use cases of SDN and NFV in the context of UAV assistance to terrestrial networks, including mobile networks. Motivated by this fact, in this survey, we guide the reader through a comprehensive discussion of the main characteristics of SDN and NFV technologies. Moreover, we provide a thorough analysis of the different classifications, use cases, and challenges related to UAV-assisted systems. We then discuss SDN/NFV-enabled UAV-assisted systems, along with several case studies and issues, such as the involvement of UAVs in cellular communications, monitoring, and routing, to name a few. We furthermore present a set of open research challenges, high-level insights, and future research directions related to UAV-assisted systems.

Today it has become important to reconfigure the networks in to new form to be more manageable, scalable, dynamic and programmable. The networks recently are so inflexible and failing to deal with the required changes for the Information Technology. Software Defined Networking (SDN) is a modern paradigm that focused to change the main idea of current network infrastructure (traditional network) by breaking the chain between the data forwarding and the control planes to introduce flexible programmability network. This paper makes comparison between the performance of traditional fat-tree network and SDN fat-tree network, which found that average Round Tripe Time (RTT) in SDN fat-tree topology will decrease by 8.96% than traditional fat-tree topology. Then shows the basic operation of OpenFlow protocol that can be applied on fat-tree topology by using SDN technology and how that can be effect on the performance of network and make it more flexible to enable the SDN module applications, like load balancer and firewall for optimizing the SDN network. In this paper the physical switches are replaced by software switches in a virtual network environment and display the SDN structure in GUI, also Floodlight controller is chosen to use as the network operating system for SDN network.

Wireless Underground Communication (WUC) is an emerging field that is being developed continuously. It provides secure mechanism of deploying nodes underground which shields them from any outside temperament or harsh weather conditions. This paper works towards introducing WUC and give a detail overview of WUC. It discusses system architecture of WUC along with the anatomy of the underground sensor motes deployed in WUC systems. It also compares Over-the-Air and Underground and highlights the major differences between the both type of channels. Since, UG communication is an evolving field, this paper also presents the evolution of the field along with the components and example UG wireless communication systems. Finally, the current research challenges of the system are presented for further improvement of the WUCs.
