Software Defined Radio technology for GNSS receivers

Abstract: The Software Defined Radio (SDR) technology, applied to the reception of Global Navigation Satellite Signals (GNSS), allows the implementation of a positioning device with a high flexibility level. The advantage is twofold: not only the GNSS SDR receiver can be easily updated during its operational life, but it becomes an outstanding tool in prototyping innovative algorithms for signal processing and signal quality monitoring. These aspects have been the key-drivers to the implementation of the NGene fully sof… Show more

“…When budgets and time are both under pressure, they inevitably select simulators, but simulators cannot anticipate the full richness and variety of real-world conditions. In this sense, the record-and-replay method, which is derived from software-defined radio (SDR) paradigm [17], is one of the easy and efficient means of characterizing new high-performing product performance in the real world by providing a combination of realism and repeatability, which is ideal for performance verification.…”

“…The term SDR refers to an ensemble of hardware and software technologies enabling reconfigurable radio communication architectures (Lo Presti et al 2014). More in detail, SDR receivers are radio communication architectures, made up of configurable hardware and software blocks and performing advanced signal processing operations.…”

“…The growth of SDR offers small satellites the opportunity to improve the way space missions develop and operate transceivers for communication network in space as seen in [36] and [40]. The ability to change the operating characteristics of a radio through software once deployed to space offers the flexibility to adapt to new science opportunities and recover from anomalies within the science payload or communication system e.g., in Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) receivers as in [38,39]. Also, potentially reduce development cost and risk by adapting generic space platforms to meet specific mission requirements.…”
