Intensive exploitation of sand quarry sites inevitably results in near total destruction of plant cover and soil degradation. The damage done is so important that without human intervention, soil scarification and vegetable return to growth may take several decades. In order to conduct a site rehabilitation programme successfully reforestation through the plantation of a native species such as the carob tree (Ceratonia siliqua) should be the appropriate choice. Because of their facilitation effect, the spontaneous leguminous plants present in the site, specifically Lotus creticus, Retama monosperma and L. creticus associated with R.monosperma can be used as nurse plants. Our assumption is that they possess a rhizosphere rich in microorganisms, which may positively impact the growth of carob. To this end, a study is conducted in order to: a) estimate the diversity of arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi (AMF) living underneath the spontaneous leguminous plants of the site; b) determine their combined effect with other microsymbionts (i.e., total bacteria and actinobacteria) on the growth of the carob tree; c) draw a comparison with carob grown in bare soil and in sterile soil mixed with peat regarding its growth parameters and mineral nutrition. The trees were grown in plastic pots under greenhouse conditions and, after 12 months, the results have shown that, against all odds, the soils of R. monosperma and L. criticus associated with R. monosperma do not significantly influence the growth of the tree whereas the impact of the soil of L. creticus is outright negative. On the other hand, peat improves the root and aerial growth of the tree, which shows in leaves number, branch number and capacity of nutrition in nitrogen. Because a little richer in actinobacteria, bare soil increases the length of the aerial parts and improves the tree’s phosphorus uptake.

Clematis fruticosa Turcz. is a dominant native shrub with the potential for spontaneous vegetation succession for restoration of the ecologically fragile and arid Daqing Mountains of Inner Mongolia, which represent an important ecological transition zone in northern China. However, knowledge regarding the interactions between native species and their root-associated arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi across different seasons and elevation gradients remains obscure. High AM fungal spore density, root colonization and arbuscular richness suggested that C. fruticosa could establish intimate symbiotic associations with AM fungi. A total of 174 AM fungal virtual taxa were identified from rhizosphere soil samples, and Glomus was dominant. The most distinct AM fungal community composition and the greatest richness and diversity were observed in the spring and at the highest elevation. Seasons • elevation interactions significantly affected Simpson diversity but not AM fungal community composition, observed richness and Shannon index. Seasons had a significant direct on AM fungal observed richness and Shannon index, and elevation had a significant direct on AM fungal observed richness. Soil available phosphorus was the most important driving factor in AM fungal richness and diversity, followed by seasons and soil moisture content. These results provied new insights suggesting that there are active and diverse "functional ingredients", for example root-associated AM fungi during the growing season, particularly with an earlier onset in the spring. They are potentially major contributors to the re-vegetation of degraded lands and the maintenance of soil structure in arid and semiarid ecosystems, which is attributable to seasonal variation in host physiology in stressful environments. Highlights• We studied the effects of seasons and elevation on AM fungal richness, diversity and community in ecologically fragile mountain areas. • Distinct community composition and greater richness and diversity of AM fungi were detected in the spring and at the highest elevation. • AM fungal richness and diversity depended on certain soil variation related to seasons and elevation.

Background: Amaranth is a plant of interest in farming due to its ability to adapt into arid and semi-arid climates. Biological activity by microorganisms in rhizosphere determines plant performance and quality.Hypothesis: The enzymatic activity is different in two types of soil, rhizosheath soil (adhered by roots) and loose soil (non-adhered by roots), in four cropping periods of amaranth.Species study: Amaranthus hypochondriacus L.Methods: Parameters of soil organic matter and several enzyme activities in the amaranth rhizosphere were assessed. Two types of soil, rhizosheath soil and loose soil, and four cropping periods were compared. Thirty-seven culturable bacterial isolates obtained from rhizosheath soil were molecularly identified.Results: Rhizosheath soil had higher content of carbon and total nitrogen compared with loose soil; however, potential enzyme activity in both soil types was similar. Dehydrogenase and acid phosphatase activities were very sensitive to the crops phenological stages. Acid and alkaline phosphatases, cellulase and protease activities correlated to changes in soil moisture. The greatest diversity of culturable bacteria was found during the flowering stage.Conclusions: In the rhizosphere of A. hypochondriacus grown in a pumiceous sandy soil, enzymatic activities in the rhizosheath and loose soils were similar, which must be considered a unique rhizosphere environment. Dehydrogenase and acid phosphatase activities were highly sensitive to changes in the crop phenology. The behavior of phosphatases and dehydrogenase activities suggests an increased dynamic soil organic matter (SOM) during the post-harvest period. In the amaranth rhizosphere, native culturable bacteria are involved in the breakdown of SOM.
