Soil contamination of heavy metals in the Katedan Industrial Development Area, Hyderabad, India

Abstract: Studies on quantitative soil contamination due to heavy metals were carried out in Katedan Industrial Development Area (KIDA), south of Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India under the Indo-Norwegian Institutional Cooperation Programme. The study area falls under a semi-arid type of climate and consists of granites and pegmatite of igneous origin belonging to the Archaean age. There are about 300 industries dealing with dyeing, edible oil production, battery manufacturing, metal plating, chemicals, etc. Most of the … Show more

“…Other manmade sources of cadmium involve electric deposition of protective films around various objects, increasing their resistance to air corrosion 7 . Cadmium compound products are used as stabilizers in plastic products, in the composition of metallic paints, various types of metal alloys, and now more frequently as anticorrosive agents 8 . Approximately 75% of the Cd produced is used in manufacturing batteries, especially nickelcadmium and alkaline batteries, with a longer lifespan than traditional batteries 7 .…”

“…Majority of its development was due to adopting the corporate social responsibility (CSR) policy by Hatti Gold Mine Company Ltd., for several years. In spite of this development, it also causes serious degradation of natural environment by instigating the metal ions through leachate, fallout, erosion, and runoff (Govil et al 2008;Dasaram et al 2011;Basavarajappa and Manjunath 2015). Once extracting the desired metals from the ore, the refused wastes are discharged into tailing pond, it may contain a high concentration of macro and microelements along with some noxious metal ions.…”
