Soil Degradation: A Challenge to Sustainable Agriculture

Abstract: Abstract. Agricultural practices have a substantial impact on many ecosystems worldwide, and give rise to variety of ecological problems. Soil degradation is one the key areas in which agriculture impacts upon ecology. Soil erosion is a result of poor farming practices which cause removal of vegetation cover from soils, the use of large fields without boundaries to slow water movement and inappropriate ploughing techniques all stimulate soil erosion. Salinity of soil is another important factor which limits th… Show more

“…Determining the geophyte flora is not only important for protecting the plant diversity, but also important for the economy and ecoturism. Geophytes are also very important for preventing land degredation and soil loss (Alam, 2014). They also have high potential to decrease environmental pollution by phytoremediation (Vakili and Aboutorab, 2013).…”

“…The distribution of stem metamorphosis of the geophyte plant samples collected from the area were as : Bulb 74%, Tuber 14%, Corm 4%, and Rhizome 8% (Table 3, Table 4). The results of this study were compared with the floristical studies conducted in nearby fields (Yıldırımlı, 1995;Kaya, 1996;Kandemir and Türkmen, 2008;Korkmaz et al, 2012), and with the other studies carried out on determining the geophyte plants in different parts of Turkey (Mammadov and Sahranç, 2003;Çelik et al, 2004;Eker et al, 2008;Özuslu and İskender, 2009;Şekeroğlu et al, 2013), and finally the results were compared with A Check List of the Flora of Turkey (Güner, 2012) (Table 5, Table 6). Totally 50 geophyte taxa were determined in our study area.…”

“…Conventional farmers centered on methods that preserve soil fertility, check the loss of topsoil, grip water in the soil and produce steady harvests. Farming system of this type is distinguished above all by a high degree of biodiversity (Burton, 1998;Acquaah, 2002;Alam, 2014). (Deshmukh, 1986) Forest gardening, Forest gardening is considered as one of the oldest agro-ecosystem, it is a plant-based food production system.…”

“…Soil erosion is the global soil degradation problem that causes significant environmental and socio-economic problems (Eswaran et al, 2001; Gomes de Souza et al, 2018;Ighodaro et al, 2013). The main consequence of land degradation is a significant decrease of its productivity, which directly affects the percentage of the agricultural population in the area (Alam, 2014;Balasubramanian, 2017). Land erosion is one of the most significant forms of land degradation in the Republic of Serbia.…”
