“…Isto também pode ser um indício de que tanto a disponibilidade de C, como a de N-NO 3 -podem estar limitando a produção de N 2 O pelo processo de desnitrificação. De acordo com Aulakh et al (1992), a desnitrificação depende da concentração de N-NO 3 -e de C-orgânico do solo e D' Haene et al (2003) encontraram uma grande correlação entre o potencial de desnitrificação do solo e o suprimento de N e C em condições laboratoriais.…”

“…Multiple regression analysis indicated that soil pH was the best predictor of the denitrification rate in the NECT (R 2 ¼ 0.48, n ¼ 19, p < 0.01). A previous study showed that a pH of 6.0-8.0 was optimal for denitrification and that denitrification was inhibited under acidic conditions (reviewed in Aulakh et al 1992). The optimum pH for short-term denitrifying enzyme activity (DEA) was at or near neutral soil pH, while the optimum pH for long-term denitrification was between 6.6 and 8.3 (Š imek et al 2002).…”

“…Denitrification results in loss of fertilizer N and the nitrous oxide emitted contributes to global warming and the destruction of the ozone layer in the stratosphere; thus, it is important to quantify denitrification rates in terrestrial ecosystems (Aulakh et al 1992). However, this quantification has been impeded by the extreme spatial and temporal variability associated with denitrification activity.…”

“…However, while some authors report minimum temperatures of -2 to 10°C for denitrification (Bailey 1976;Smid and Beauchamp 1976;Dorland and Beauchamp 1991), others have observed that denitrification does not occur in soils at temperatures ≤5°C (Jacobson and Alexander 1980;Aulakh et al 1992). These divergent results could be due to the capacity of denitrifiers to adapt to their environmental temperature or to temperature-induced shifts in the structure of the soil denitrifier community (Kaplan et al 1977;King and Nedwell 1984).…”
