Soil Load on Plastic Pipe and its Influence on Lifetime

Abstract: Lifetime of plastic pipes can be estimated by integration of a power law describing the crack kinetics. However, this procedure requires an FEM (finite element method) calculation of the possible crack propagation in the pipe to obtain stress intensity factor dependency on the crack length. It is very important for the simulation to consider every possible load that is acting on the pipe. This contribution deals with FEM modelling of a pipe that is loaded by internal pressure, residual stresses and soil loads.… Show more

“…Yet another crucial internal attribute is the result of external stresses, such as those caused by the surrounding soil, tree roots, vehicles, and impacts by third parties [16], [28], [37], [38]. Interactions with the soil are the main source of external stress; the soil's contraction or expansion caused by temperature variations induces significant stress and causes pipes to deform or break [16], [28].…”

“…They also have additional advantages over rigid materials, such as; no brittle pipe failures due to overloading, low pipe weight, lower risk of leakage at the connection points, excellent chemical resistance, long lifetime, an environmentally friendly solution of the installed pipe systems, possibility to bend the plastic pipe to be installed in curves, relatively high pipe length, and easy jointing. [5][6][7][8][9][10] A finite element model (FEM) of a polyethylene (PE) pipe loaded by internal pressure, residual stresses and soil loads was developed by Poduska et al 11 According to their study, the lifetime of PE pipes exceeds 100 years. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), high density polyethylene (HDPE), and glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) were widely employed in sewage applications.…”
