Soil organic carbon and total nitrogen dynamics in paddy soils on the Java Island, Indonesia

Abstract: Soil organic carbon is one of the soil quality parameters. Soil organic carbon and total nitrogen play an important role in soil physicochemical fertility. The purpose of this paper was to observe the dynamics of organic matter and nitrogen content in paddy soil in Java. Data is obtained from the collection of various research results since 1990, then to analyze the correlation between the chemical properties of the soil. Out of 860 data in five provinces in Java showed a strong correlation between soil organi… Show more

“…However, in the lowland zone the soil pH negatively related with total N. Furthermore, the soil pH negatively but not significantly correlated with OC in all zones. Findings, e.g., by Wibowo & Kasno (2021); Bi et al (2018);and Zhou et al (2019), revealed a negative and significant relationship between soil pH and OC, similarly to the present study. This indicates that a low pH promotes the formation of organic matter.…”

“…While the C-organic should be at least 4 %, the average rate in samples was 1.35 % with the lowest quantity of 0.62 and the highest of 2.67 -these figures characterize badly-damaged soil. This finding corroborates an earlier report that more than 77 % of paddy fields in Java had low organic carbon [26,67]. That there is inadequate vegetation due to monoculture in the research sites and that farmers barely recover soil biomass are deduced to be the reasons [2, 49,50].…”

“…SOC is the key indicator of soil quality and agricultural sustainability [71]. SOC content relies heavily on nitrogen binding in soil [2,67]. The SOC test results came out between 1.07 % and 4.62 % for all 18 samples, and seven samples reached the level of as low as 1.65 %.…”

“…It can be seen that the C-organic and the pH of the cattle manure are very high and alkaline. This finding is supported [12] that C-organic has a positive correlation and significantly increases the availability of nitrogen in the soil. Increasing the dose of nitrogen could increase the growth and biomass of Gotu kola at a dose of 60 kg/ha N giving the maximum number of Gotu kola leaves [13].…”
