Soil salt balance in a cotton field under drip irrigation and subsurface pipe drainage systems

Abstract: Soil salinization is a vital factor limiting crop yield in dryland oasis cropland. A filmmulched drip irrigation and subsurface pipe drainage (MDI-SPD) system has been proved to be highly efficient at mitigating salination globally. However, the soil salt balance in time and spatial dimension is unclear in this system. A MDI-SPD experiment was conducted for 4 yr (2015-2019) in a field in Manas River Basin, western China. The subsurface drainage pipes were installed at a depth of 1 m with a space of 15 m. Three… Show more

“…An efficient irrigation and drainage system can remove solutes and act as a barrier for preventing salinity and alkalinity [7,8]. As an underground drainage facility, the subsurface drainage pipe (SDP) has the advantages of high efficiency, water conservation, and land conservation, which is conducive to mechanized operations [9][10][11]. SDP can reduce soil salinity while controlling the groundwater level, overcoming the drawbacks of traditional ameliorate that cannot discharge salts from the soil [12,13].…”

“…An efficient irrigation and drainage system can eliminate solutes and serve as a barrier to prevent salinity and alkalinity [8,9]. As part of underground drainage facilities, SDPs are highly efficient and contribute to water as well as land conservation, giving rise to mechanized operations [10][11][12]. SDPs can decrease soil salinity while controlling groundwater levels and overcome the drawbacks of traditional amendment methods that cannot discharge salts from soil [13,14].…”
