One of the largest remnants of tropical dry forest is the South American Gran Chaco. A quarter of this biome is in Paraguay, but there have been few studies in the Paraguayan Chaco. The Gran Chaco flora is diverse in structure, function, composition and phenology. Fundamental ecological questions remain in this biome, such as what bioclimatic factors shape the Chaco’s composition, structure and phenology. In this study, we integrated forest inventories from permanent plots with monthly high-resolution NDVI from PlanetScope and historical climate data from WorldClim to identify bioclimatic predictors of forest structure, composition and phenology. We found that bioclimatic variables related to precipitation were correlated with stem density and Pielou evenness index, while temperature-related variables correlated with basal area. The best predictor of forest phenology (NDVI variation) was precipitation lagged by 1 month followed by temperature lagged by 2 months. In the period with most water stress, the phenological response correlates with diversity, height and basal area, showing links with dominance and tree size. Our results indicate that even if the ecology and function of Dry Chaco Forest is characterised by water limitation, temperature has a moderating effect by limiting growth and influencing leaf flush and deciduousness.

Amédée F. Jacques y Thomas J. Page refirieron la presencia de bancos calcáreos y dunas de arena en las vecindades del río Salado, relacionando estos elementos con un ambiente costero o marino. Contrariamente a lo que supusieron estos autores, las unidades sedimentarias aflorantes en la zona son continentales. Sin embargo, existe en el subsuelo de la región una potente columna sedimentaria marina de ca. 15-25 Ma de edad, de modo que el mar habría efectivamente alcanzado en el pasado el área donde actualmente se encuentran las áridas planicies de la provincia de Santiago del Estero.

The Dry Chaco in South America is a semi-arid ecoregion prone to dryland salinization. In this region, we investigated coarse-scale surface soil moisture (SM), soil temperature, soil salinity and vegetation, using L-band microwave brightness temperature (TB) observations and retrievals from the Soil Moisture Ocean Salinity (SMOS) and Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite missions, Catchment Land Surface Model (CLSM) simulations, and in situ measurements within 26 sampled satellite pixels. Across these 26 sampled pixels, the satellite-based SM outperformed CLSM SM when evaluated against field data, and forward L-band TB simulations derived from in situ SM and temperature performed better than those derived from CLSM estimates when evaluated against SMOS TB observations. The surface salinity for the sampled pixels was on average only 4 mg/g and only locally influenced the TB simulations, when including salinity in the dielectric mixing model of the forward radiative transfer model (RTM) simulations. To explore the potential of retrieving salinity together with other RTM parameters to optimize TB simulations over the entire Dry Chaco, the RTM was inverted using 10 years of multi-angular SMOS TB data and constraints of CLSM SM and temperature. However, the latter modeled SM was not sufficiently accurate and factors such as open surface water were missing in the background constraints, so that the salinity retrievals effectively represented a bulk correction of the dielectric constant, rather than salinity per se. However, the retrieval of vegetation, scattering albedo and surface roughness resulted in realistic values.
