Sol-Gel Silica Matrix as Reservoir for Controlled Release of Paracetamol: Characterization and Kinetic Analysis

Abstract: Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) are usually suitable candidates for the development of drug delivery devices. Sol-gel chemistry represents an easy method to obtain porous silica nanoparticles. Mesoporous silica nanomaterials have been widely used for drug delivery purposes. In this work we synthesized silica based materials using two molar alkoxide:water ratios 1:4 and 1:8, incorporating paracetamol to develop a nano-sized matrix for controlled release purposes. The samples exhibited different v… Show more

“…The drug release kinetics proceeded in two release stages, a fast release observed in the first hours and then sustained release. The amount of paracetamol diffused from SiO 2 was 60% after 3 h and 80% after 200 h [ 49 ]. On the other hand, only 27% of paracetamol in 12 h was released from activated carbon powder, the drug loading capacity of which was 281 mg/g [ 39 ].…”

“…The Zeta Sizer Nano (ZS), a high performance two angles particle size, zeta potential, and molecular weight analyzer ideal for measurement of small volume samples at very low or high concentration and the detection of aggregates, was used to calculate the average particle size of synthesised nanomaterials using the Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) technique. Non-Invasive Backscatter Optics (NIBS) performs significantly better than 90 scattering optics systems (Lopez et al 2016 ).…”
