Sol-gel synthesis and characterization of Co3O4/CeO2 nanocomposites and its application for photocatalytic discoloration of organic dye from aqueous solutions

Abstract: Herein, Co 3 O 4 /CeO 2 nanocomposite was synthesized by the modified Pechini method. Citric, maleic, succinic, and trimsic acids were used as a stabilizer, and the variation affected the morphology and size of the synthesized nanocomposites. Subsequently, the formation of Co 3 O 4 /CeO 2 nanocomposites was confirmed by various analyses. Furthermore, the particles were considered for size and morphology by SEM and HRTEM analyses, and the sample that used trimsic acid as the stabilizer was designated as the goa… Show more

“…35 Various steps are required to accurately investigate the photocatalysis process, including the effect of light, the effect of dye adsorption on the catalyst, the pH and temperature effect, the effect of the photocatalyst, and so on. 23,36 First, a control test was performed to investigate the effect of UV and visible light irradiation on the degradation of erythrosine and malachite green for 90 min at ambient temperature to study the effect of light alone, i.e., photolysis. As shown in Fig.…”

“…The following formula was used to calculate the discoloration percentage ( eqn (1) ): % Discoloration = ( A 0 − A t )/ A 0 × 100, where A 0 and A t are the absorbance values of the dye solution at 0 and t min, respectively. 23 …”

“…Crystalline sizes were calculated from the Scherrer equation, D c = Kλ / β cos θ . 22 The crystalline size for nanocomposites for each XRD pattern was calculated separately and listed in Table 1 . The average crystallite size of the synthesized nanocomposite was calculated at about 29 nm.…”

“…11 , the type III isotherm with a type H3 hysteresis loop for the nanocomposites was obtained. 22 The data were obtained using BET and BJH calculations of specific surface area, the total pore volume, and the mean pore diameters. The specific surface area was 46.47 (m 2 g −1 ), the total pore volume was 10.67 (cm 3 g −1 ), and the mean pore diameter was 1.21 nm.…”
