Wastewater sludge is a by-product of waste water treatment; it is often employed in agricultural processes following appropriate microbiological stabilization. In this study, we evaluated two methods of sludge stabilization in the waste water treatment plant of Sotaquirá, Colombia. The two assessed stabilization methods were dewatering on drying beds and alkaline stabilization. The stabilization through dewatering on drying bed was carried out for five months. Alkaline stabilization was conducted for 96 hours with three concentrations of calcium oxide, 7%, 9%, and 13% w/w. Humidity, pH, organic carbon, phosphorus, organic nitrogen, fecal coliforms, somatic phages, total helminth eggs, and Salmonella sp. were monitored monthly for the sludge under dewatering treatment and at 0, 12, 24 hours for sludge under alkaline stabilization treatment. Both treatments succeded in eliminating Salmonella sp. Helminth eggs were eliminated by alkaline stabilization, whereas it was reduced to one or zero helminth eggs with the dewatering treatment. Somatic phages were eliminated with alkaline stabilization but were only reduced to 3.52 log CFU/g with the dewatering method. Dewatering on drying beds produced biosolids that can be used for soil restoration. Whereas alkaline stabilization produced biosolids that can be used for agricultural purposes. Alkaline stabilization with 9% and 13 % calcium oxide ostensibly reduced nitrogen and phosphorus contents in the sludge, whereas 7 % calcium affected less the phosphorus concentration of the sludge. These results indicate that sludge dewatering on drying beds is an effective sludge sanitation protocol to be implemented in small waste water treatment plants, such that in Sotaquirá, Colombia.

Wastewater treatment leads to a significant production of about 150 to 200 kg of sludge per population equivalent (P.E) per year, with a humidity level higher than 90%. The treatment and discharge of this sludge involves high costs for wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), which can amount to up to 60% of their total operating cost. The environmental and public health aspect should also be carefully considered during evacuation as sludge may contain harmful elements. Currently, several treatment, valorization and disposal methods are possible for sludge. In order to respect the various constraints on the possibilities of discharging sludge and to minimize its cost, a reasonable approach must be followed to establish an optimal management path according to the WWTP situation. The objective of this work is to develop a methodology for optimizing sludge treatment, valorization and disposal methods for a given WWTP. This method is based on operational research technique. The methodology follows the following six steps: description of the existing situation, identification of possible treatment, valorization and disposal methods for the WWTP and development of a decision tree specific to the WWTP, mathematical formulation and assumptions, mathematical resolution and sensitivity analysis, validation of the solution and application of the solution. After the application of this methodology, a decision support tool is developed to define the optimal method(s) for sludge management in the WWTP. According to the example of the application of this methodology on sludge management of the WWTP of Marrakech (Morocco), the optimal solution, with respect to the data used and keeping the installations in place, is the application of agricultural spreading after the sludge treatments which are: thickening, anaerobic digestion, mechanical dehydration and solar drying. On a 20-year operation, an average gain of about €10 (110 DHs) per ton of dry solid (DS) incoming is generated.

A Takagi Sugeno fuzzy (TSF) modeling of an indirect hybrid solar-electrical dryer operated in forced convection (0.027 kg/s) was developed. The hybrid dryer was considered as a nonlinear and uncertain system where the operating point varies with weather conditions and airflow. The proposed TSF model was used to predict the drying temperature in no load conditions. Different experimental measurements were set up and used for evaluating the reliability of this model. At first and before applying this method to hybrid solar-electrical dryer, the TSF modeling was tested on solar mode and electrical mode where only one energy source was considered in each mode. The proposed model was experimentally validated in two main modes of the dryer operation: solar mode and electrical mode. The predicted behavior was closed to the experimental data with Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 2.34 and 2.21 in solar mode and electrical mode, respectively. The obtained predicted behavior confirms the pertinence of the identified model. The TSF model of the dryer leads to predict the drying temperature instantly with a huge reduction in simulation time in comparison with other modeling techniques. Thus, it is useful for synthesizing a control system of the drying parameters.
