The hotel industry in Iran faces critical challenges that underscore the urgent need for sustainable practices, specifically in the realms of energy, water, and food. Despite industry growth, a mere three percent of hotels fall into the five- and four-star categories, emphasizing the need for widespread adoption of sustainable practices. Focused on Ramsar in Mazandaran, the study underscores the importance of eco-friendly strategies to tackle challenges related to the food–water–energy nexus. Employing the SCOC, Fuzzy BWM, and Z-MARCOS methods, the research proposes a robust framework for evaluating hotel development strategies. The case study reveals a concentration of hotels in Khorasan Razavi, Mazandaran, and Tehran, urging prioritization of sustainable practices in these regions. Analyzing Ramsar’s climate, the study suggests leveraging solar energy and implementing green roofs, emphasizing an integrated approach to achieve eco-friendly hotel construction. Furthermore, the research provides a prioritized set of strategies based on SCOC, aligning with criteria regarding the water–energy–food nexus. It emphasizes internal strengths, opportunities, and strategic technology partnerships while acknowledging external challenges such as political stability and climate change risks. The discussion introduces an Importance–Performance Analysis (IPA) to guide managerial decisions, presenting an insightful perspective for effective strategy implementation in Iran’s evolving hotel industry.

This study was conducted to investigate the role of factors affecting the utilization of solar energy for the sustainable rural development of Zanjan Province. The statistical population in this study was rural households who used solar energy technology in Zanjan Province, and 210 households were selected as a sample using Kerjesi & Morgan’s table. The data collection tool was a questionnaire. The face and content validity of the questionnaire was confirmed by a panel of experts before the pre-test. The reliability of the research tool was also confirmed by conducting a pre-test among thirty people other than the statistical sample and calculating Cronbach’s alpha for the main scales of the questionnaire (in the range of 0.72–0.90). Data were analyzed using SPSS24 and AMOS22. The data were analyzed using structural equation modeling. The results showed a positive and significant relationship between educational, socio-cultural, policymaking, and environmental factors and the utilization of solar energy, and these variables explained 37% of the variance of the dependent variable. However, a weak significant relationship was observed between economic and technical factors with the utilization of solar energy. The finding of this study has some meaningful policy implications. The energy costs, sunlight coverage, and the efficiency of solar energy systems have caused solar energy to be considered as a suitable alternative for providing electricity and heating in rural areas of Iran.

Technical and Economic Potential of Solar Energy on Rooftops: A Case Study at Lampang Rajabhat University, Thailand

This paper presents an assessment of the potential of solar rooftops, and an analysis of the feasibility of investing in rooftop photovoltaic systems for the buildings at Lampang Rajabhat University. The ArcGIS solar radiation analysis tool was used to prepare the solar radiation maps. The derived solar radiation values were then used to evaluate the viability of investing in rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems, considering factors that included Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR), and Payback Period (PB) through project analysis and evaluation. According to the analysis, 23 buildings could be fitted with a solar rooftop, and 4,106 solar panels would cover 8.29% of the roof area. Southerly oriented pitched roofs had high solar radiation; nevertheless, slopes steeper than 40° reduced the radiation. Flat roofs with solar panels that were oriented southward and inclined at around 15° were found to be effective. When the PV-potential value was compared with the PV output value, a 0.19% difference between the values was observed. After we adjusted the PV-potential value in the PVpotential areas, the solar energy potential was determined to be 1,540,389.14 kWh per year. This potential could result in a 42.73% reduction in the total electricity cost at the university. Furthermore, the system's financial and environmental analyses revealed that the discounted PB would be 9 years and 6 months, with a reduction of 791.44 tCO2eq/year. These findings could be used to guide the university in developing a policy about the installation of a rooftop PV system, reduce fossil fuel consumption, and increase self-generated clean energy. These indicators are critical milestones for the university toward becoming a green university and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals
