With accelerating urbanization, lighting problems frequently appears for residents at lower levels of buildings. In order to solve the sunlight blocking problem between high buildings, a new solar optical guide lighting (SOGL) system is proposed in this study. Numerical simulations are carried out to evaluate the SOGL system according to the light distribution both inside the buildings and between building groups at different times. Experimental setups are built to validate the simulated results. Main factors influencing the optical efficiency are discussed. It is found from this study that the SOGL system can realize the lighting purpose inside and between high buildings. The shadow areas between buildings are lightened into acceptable levels. The stronger the solar irradiation is, the higher the optical efficiency would be. And decreasing the ratio of optical guide pipe length to its radius would lead to the rise of optical efficiency.

In this paper, the principle, structural composition, materials, and characteristics of solar optical fiber lighting system were discussed. The different luminance requirements of different zones of highway tunnel were identified on the basis of the analysis of tunnel lighting considering drivers’ visually self-accommodating physiological function for luminance change. Taken Huashuyan Tunnel of G109 Highway located in Hohhot of Inner Mongolia in China as the case study, the system design of solar optical fiber lighting for enhanced lighting in threshold zone of highway tunnel was made. It was indicated through calculation that the design length of solar optical fiber enhanced lighting was related to the design speed, longitudinal slope, and overhead clearance of the tunnel, and the design luminance of solar optical fiber enhanced lighting was related to the luminance outside the tunnel, the design speed, and the design traffic flow of the tunnel. Luminance analysis of the solar optical fiber lighting system of Huashuyan Tunnel was made based on the on-site experiment. Also, the 3D illuminance simulation results by DIALux software were made to indicate that the solar optical fiber lighting system in Huashuyan Tunnel still well met the enhanced lighting demand even not considering the contribution of LED lighting.

In this paper, we present a design and optical simulation of a daylighting system using a novel design of linear Fresnel lens, which is constructed based on the conservation of optical path length and edge ray theorem. The linear Fresnel lens can achieve a high uniformity by using a new idea of design in which each groove of the lens distributes sunlight uniformly over the receiver so that the whole lens also uniformly distributes sunlight over the receiver. In this daylighting system, the novel design of linear Fresnel lens significantly improves the uniformity of collector and distributor. Therefore, it can help to improve the performance of the daylighting system. The structure of the linear Fresnel lenses is designed by using Matlab. Then, the structure of lenses is appreciated by ray tracing in LightTools TM to find out the optimum lens shape. In addition, the simulation is performed by using LightTools TM to estimate the efficiency of the daylighting system. The results show that the designed collector can achieve the efficiency of~80% with the tolerance of~0.6 0 and the concentration ratio of 340 times, while the designed distributor can reach a high uniformity of >90%.
