This paper presents hybrid solar thermal/electricity automated oven. The work compares sliding mode control (SMC) to traditional PID control of the oven system using MATLAB/Simulink 2014b model. SMC control method shows faster rise and settling time. The control technique has been designed to automate change of temperature level of the oven by accepting multiple reference inputs. This has been implemented using microcontroller programed in C++. Flat-plate solar thermal collector and paint curing oven have also been implemented for experimental test. The results obtain from the experiments are in conformity to the simulation results. The collector delivers 43.27% of the total energy required to operate the oven up to 120°C at 200W/m2 solar insolation. Calculation of payback period for commercial viability on the cost of the collector installation indicates a year and four months for an average insolation of seven hours per day. These results demonstrate that the research work is effective and solves the problem of temperature control in curing modern organic paints and the challenge of power requirements in the operation of oven.

This paper presents a sliding mode control (SMC) design for gasifier reactor temperature control. Temperature control is a critical aspect of biomass gasification for quality syngas production. However, accurate modeling and effective control method are the major challenges of gasifier reactor temperature control. The gasification system processes are not yet well understood to model from the first principle due to the complex and nonlinear nature of the process. Also, conventional control methods such as proportional, integral, and derivative control have not been effective in controlling gasification systems. Hence, this work has used experimental data from a 500 kVA updraft gasifier reactor to develop a data-driven mathematical model. The system identification result predicts 86.36% goodness of fit on the model data and 88.26% on the validation data. Discrete time sliding mode control has been designed from the model and implemented in Simulink to investigate the performance of the control method on the gasifier. The result of the system time response shows that the controller effectively drives the temperature monotonically from 25°C to 700 °C in finite time (11.37 minutes). It also establishes a quasi-sliding motion with an ultimate band of ±1℃ for the remainder of the simulation time. Hence, the control technique guarantees optimal temperature control for any feedstock type which will result in higher conversion efficiency, more syngas yield, and improve syngas quality and durability of the gasifier reactor among others.

The paint shop plant, as the largest energy consumer in the automotive manufacturing process, requires special attention to optimize energy efficiency and thermal management, reduce environmental impact and diminish the total costs to improve marketability. The current review covers the description of the automotive paint shop, recognition of the paint film layers, characterization of the paint spray applicators and evolution of their technology's advancement, explanation of the coating processes development, and investigation of the curing ovens thermal procedure in an automotive production stage. After systematically recalling pioneering studies dealing with the coating techniques and the ovening strategies, this paper focuses on reviewing recent findings conducted with improved modern methods in this subject area for higher sustainability and efficiency. Critical performance factors in developing surface durability, corrosion protectivity, paint material consumption, and environmental pollution are discussed. Focus is brought to the electrostatic spray-painting procedure flow physics understanding, particularly the complicated three-dimensional behaviors of paint droplets formation, distribution, control and deposition on the body in constructed spray plums. Then, the baking and drying process of the produced film layer in the curing oven is precisely reviewed. The review additionally aids in the identification of knowledge gaps in the literature that should be addressed in future research.
