Solid Implants in Facial Plastic Surgery: Potential Complications and How to Prevent Them

Abstract: Allogenic implants are an effective alternative to autologous grafts in the reconstruction of facial defects. These implants are used to reconstruct a variety of bony and soft-tissue defects, including the frontal and temporal regions; internal orbit; infraorbital rim; malar, paranasal, and nasal regions; mandible; and chin. In comparison to their autologous counterparts, alloplastic materials are more readily available, lack donor-site morbidity, decrease surgical time and cost, and still have relatively good… Show more

“…Synthetic or alloplastic nasal implants are commercially available as an alternative to tissue grafts. The most common implants are composed of silicone, porous high-density polyethylene (MedPor), or expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (Gore-Tex) [77,78]. Synthetic implants are readily available, making multiple procedures unnecessary, have ideal form factor or are easily carved, and decrease surgical time and costs [77].…”

Synthetic implants are readily available, making multiple procedures unnecessary, have ideal form factor or are easily carved, and decrease surgical time and costs [77]. Despite these perceived advantages of using synthetic implants, they are frequently associated with complications including inflammation, infection, resorption, dislocation, and extrusion [77,79].…”
