The mining industry is confronted with substantial challenges in achieving environmental sustainability, particularly regarding water usage, waste management, and dam safety. The increasing global demand for minerals has led to increased mining activities, resulting in significant environmental consequences. By 2025, an estimated 19 billion tons of solid tailings are projected to accumulate worldwide, exacerbating concerns over their management. Tailings storage facilities represent the largest water sinks within mining operations. The mismanagement of water content in tailings can compromise their stability, leading to potential dam failures and environmental catastrophes. In response to these pressing challenges, the mining industry is increasingly turning to innovative solutions such as tailings dewatering and water reuse/recycling strategies to promote sustainable development. This review paper aims to (I) redefine the role of mine tailings and explore their physical, chemical, and mineralogical characteristics; (II) discuss environmental concerns associated with conventional disposal methods; (III) explore recent advancements in dewatering techniques, assessing their potential for water recovery, technical and economic constraints, and sustainability considerations; (IV) and present challenges encountered in water treatment and recycling within the mining industry, highlighting areas for future research and potential obstacles in maximizing the value of mine tailings while minimizing their environmental impact.

Em função da predominância global da produção de aço através da rota de alto forno, da idade e valor destes ativos, além dos custos e impactos na produção para a adoção de novas tecnologias de menores impactos ambientais, prevê-se a continuação da utilização dos carvões coqueificáveis sob a forma de coque como principal agente redutor e fonte de calor. Neste cenário, o reprocessamento e aproveitamento dos rejeitos do processamento de carvões coqueificáveis para atendimento a esta demanda, torna-se uma alternativa interessante, tanto do ponto de vista econômico quanto ambiental. Permite tanto o melhor aproveitamento de recursos naturais não renováveis quanto menores níveis de emissões de CO2 e consumos de água e energia quando comparado com a produção a partir dos minérios provenientes diretamente da mina. O artigo apresenta os resultados do programa de caraterização metalúrgica de misturas dos carvões do portfólio de produtos metalúrgicos do Carvão Moatize com os carvões metalúrgicos gerados a partir dos rejeitos da barragem TSF 1 (Tailings Storage Facility 1) de Moatize. Os resultados preliminares indicaram a viabilidade da geração de 5,5 a 7 Mt de carvão coqueificável com 10,5% de cinzas e 1,21 Mt de carvão térmico com 25% de cinzas e 25 MJ/kg a partir dos rejeitos contidos neste reservatório.

This paper presents an original method for the micronization of coal particles in a hydro-jet mill, which allows effective comminuting of coal in the pressure range of 100–250 MPa, at a variable water flow rate of 0.2–0.5 dm3/s. The discussed high-pressure water jet mill (HPWJM) allows the comminution of standard fines, with a grain size up to 2 mm, and at a relatively high comminuting efficiency of 8 to 55 g/s. In addition, the paper presents energy-consumption ratios, and indicates the advantage of this method over mechanical grinding in a planetary ball-mill. At optimum conditions, coal comminution at an efficiency of Qc = 38.4 g/s and at an energy input of EH = 1.1 MJ/kg provides an average particle size of about 40 µm. The degree of comminution was further improved by applying roto-turbulent micronization, which resulted in an average size of comminuted coal particles of only 17 µm. As an additional result, the actual surface area of the particles increased by 10–30 thousand times when compared to ground fines—this fact is of significance for the application of micronized particles in quasi-liquid coal-water fuel.
