Solid Oral Flexible Formulations for Pediatric and Geriatric patients: Age-appropriate Formulation Platforms

Abstract: Chandrasekaran and Kandasamy: Solid Oral Flexible Formulation Platform for Paediatrics and Geriatrics The oral route of drug administration is mostly preferred by paediatric and geriatric patients. Patient non-compliance due to poor taste and swallowing problems are major issues in paediatric and geriatric drug therapy. Lack of age-appropriate formulations, inadequate labelling instructions, non-compatible and non-palatable medicines are the main reasons for medication errors in paediatric patients. “…Microparticles of carbamazepine were prepared using EC as a matrix polymer and HPMC as a hydrophilic pore former utilizing a high-shear granulator fitted with an atomizing spray system. Granulation of carbamazepine and EC with ethanolic binder solution resulted in obtaining microparticles with 16 h extended release [87]. EC microparticles can be formulated using a variety of techniques: interfacial and in situ polymerization, coacervation phase separation, spray drying, spray congealing, or by rotary fluidization bed granulator method [88].…”

“…This notion may have stemmed from the lack of alternatives available (e.g., clinical/supply issue) or lack of awareness about available and less-expensive alternatives (e.g., knowledge/awareness issue). Most of the commonly used medications, especially those designed to target the adult market, come mainly as tablets and capsules (Chandrasekaran & Ruckmani, 2018). Design of flexible formulations such as chewable tablets, orodispersible tablets, pellets, powders, or granules can provide flexibility in methods of drug delivery to older patients (McGillicuddy et al, 2017).…”

“…As they offer versatility in medication administration, oral solid dosage forms platforms are able to offer child-friendly preparation choices to all paediatric populations and geriatric patients. To increase patient compliance in children, these formulations can serve as a foundation for long-acting medications and fixed-dose combinations of multiple medications (Ch and Kandasamy, 2018).…”
