Solid Phase Extraction of Inorganic Mercury Using 5‐Phenylazo‐8‐hydroxyquinoline and Determination by Cold Vapor Atomic Fluorescence Spectroscopy in Natural Water Samples

Abstract: 8-Hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ) was chosen as a powerful ligand for Hg solid phase extraction. Among several chelating resins based on 8-HQ, 5-phenylazo-8-hydroxyquinoline (5Ph8HQ) is used for mercury extraction in which the adsorption dynamics were fully studied. It has been shown that Hg(II) is totally absorbed by 5Ph8HQ within the first 30 minutes of contact time with t 1/2 5 minutes, following Langmuir adsorption model. At pH 4, the affinity of mercury is unchallenged by other metals except, for Cu(II), which ha… Show more

“…The chemists also prepared various types of Oxine mixed ligand, by mixing it or one of its derivatives with other organic compounds (6)(7)(8)(9)(10) . Azo quinolones are the most important quinolones derivatives (11) , where used in solid phase extraction of Mercury(II) ion in water samples (12) . Some of azo oxine derivatives used for extracting some heavy metal ions by cloud point extraction technics (13) , while the others showed clear anticancer activity (14) .…”

“…Due to the bio-accumulation of mercury, the focus on determining and extracting very low concentrations of mercury has been increasing [20][21][22][23]. Thus, this requires the development of materials with high selectivity and high surface areas to remove mercury from environmental samples at the ultra-trace concentration within the presence of many interfering substances.…”

“…Developments in SPE are still ongoing, using a variety of adsorbents of different sizes to apply the method in several different chemical processes, e.g. the use of 5-phenylazo-8-hydroxyquinoline (5Ph8HQ) as chelating resins, 21 the application of octadecyl silica cartridge with 4-bpdb (1,4-bis(4-pyridyl)-2,3-diaza-1,3-butadiene) as a sorbent and ligand, 22 the modification of the polypyrrole/carbon nanotube/1,10phenanthroline as a composite sorbent 23 and the applicability of dithizone-functionalized materials as sorbents in solid phase extraction/displacement. 24 Moreover, the magnetic property of the material used can be a substitute for the centrifugation or filtration steps and the solid phase can easily separate the analyte via an external magnetic field, in a technique that is called magnetic dispersive solid phase extraction (MdSPE).…”
