Solid‐Phase Radioimmunoassay of Serum IgG, IgM, and IgA Antibodies to Cytomegalovirus

Abstract: A radioimmunoassay (RIA) using polystyrene beads as the solid phase for cytomegalovirus (CMV) antigen and iodinated immunosorbent purified anti-human IgG, IgM, and IgA as indicator antibodies was developed for the detection of immunoglobulin class-specific antibodies to CMV. An antigen prepared from extracellular virus was essential for reliable results, and a preparation ultracentrifuged and sonicated twice was better than a crude antigen. The optimal antigen gave low cpm values with a negative reference seru… Show more

“…Higher CMV-specific antibody titres reflect recent or reactivated CMV infection (Musiani et al, 1988) and there is evidence that they are correlated with the CMV antigenemia test which is a quantitative marker for CMV load (van Zanten et al, 1995). In addition the increase in the titre of CMV-specific IgG that is observed in association with ageing is believed the reflect the increased frequency of viral reactivation within this cohort (Stowe et al, 2007;Torfason et al, 1981). The implication of our findings is that it is the magnitude of the CMVspecific immune response, rather than CMV infection itself, that is associated with symptoms of depression and anxiety.…”

“…The detection of a higher prevalence of specific IgA to HSV and VZV in APFP patients shown in this study adds further support to the postulated role of these viruses in the etiology of APFP. Virus-specific IgA has been detected in both primary and recurrent VZV and CMV infection [Brunnel et al, 1975; Sarov, 1980, 1981;Sarov et al, 1981;Torfason et al, 1981;Haikin and Sarov, 1982;Sarov et al, 19821. HSV-2 IgA antibody to membrane antigen has been found to be detected significantly more frequently and at higher titers in patients with cervical dysplasia than among matched controls [Mendis et al, 19811.…”

“…Overall, 78% of the 32 women who delivered infected infants and 65% of the 17 who delivered uninfected babies possessed IgM antibodies. Or, stated from the point of view of serological results, of the 36 women that possessed IgM antibodies, only 25 (69%) transmitted the infection in utero. Of the 13 women that had undetectable IgM antibodies, 7 (54%) delivered infected infants.…”
