Solid-state sensors for trace hydrogen gas detection

Abstract: This paper reviews the development, history, theoretical basis, and experimental performance of solid-state hydrogen detectors under flow-through conditions available to date such as pyroelectric, piezoelectric, fiber optic, and electrochemical devices. Semiconductor hydrogen detectors will only be reviewed briefly, as excellent reviews on this subject already exist. In view of the fact that almost all the devices that will be discussed later in this paper use Pd as a hydrogen trap, we devote a subsection to e… Show more

“…The fractional change of r and the rising time observed in a cycle are approximately 1.6% and 30 s, respectively, consistent with the typical features of H-induced resistive changes due to the reversible metal-hydride transitions and the difference between the electrical resistivities of the two phases. 7,8 Finally, we note that the AFM image of a freshly prepared sample [ Fig. 5(a)] and that taken after six switching cycles [ Fig.…”

“…The effect has been used for making H 2 sensors, in which the sensing elements are in the form of Pd wires or thin films. 7,8 Typical resistive change based on this mechanism is approximately 0.5 to 8% in an environment containing 1 to 5% of H 2 . In general, the response time is in the order of 10 to 20 s.…”

“…A major safety concern with hydrogen is combustibility. Therefore, early leak detection and concentration determination of hydrogen have been areas of intense research [1][2][3] . There are various types of hydrogen sensors that use a wide range of detection mechanisms.…”
