Solid waste dumping site analysis using GIS and remote sensing: Bonga Town, Southwestern Ethiopia

Abstract: The main objective of this study was to select potential solid waste landfill areas suitable for Bonga Town that are environmentally sound. The key data were LANDSAT 8 and SPOT-6 satellite images with a spatial resolution of 15 and 1.5 m, respectively; a digital elevation model with a spatial resolution of 30 m; and a ground control point, which was collected through a ground point survey and a topographic map of the study area. Each parameter was subjected to a peer review according to the analytical hierarch… Show more

“…The solid waste dumping site should be located at a suitable distance from faults. The minimum distance between fault solid waste dumping sites should be away from 1 km to prevent the pollution or contamination of groundwater and collapse or sliding damage of solid waste dumping sites [ 15 , 27 , 43 , 47 ]. The distance to fault suitability classes of 1000m–2000 m, 2000m–3000 m, and >30000 m covered about 36.8 % of the area mainly falling in moderately and highly suitable zones.…”

“…The most suitable and highly suitable sites are located from 1500 to 2000 m and >2000 m of GWWP. The previous studies [ 4 , 15 , 22 ] explained that the dumping sites should be 500 m away from the groundwater resources to minimize groundwater contamination.…”

“…GIS facilitates the analysis and processing of spatial data, the computation of numerous criteria, and the integration of informational layers, thereby aiding in the identification of optimal landfill locations. Notably, a multitude of studies worldwide have successfully employed GIS and multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) methodologies for solid waste landfill site selection in various countries, including Thailand, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Zambia, Pakistan, Ethiopia, among others [6] [13] and [14].…”
