Solidification of Iron‐Rich Intermetallics in Squeeze cast Al‐5.0Cu‐0.5 Fe Alloys with Different Mn/Fe Ratio

Abstract

The solidi¿cation characteristics of iron-rich intermetallics in squeeze cast Al-5.0Cu-0.5Fe alloys with different Mn/Fe ratio have been investigated by optical microscope, scanning electronic microscope and differential scanning calorimeter. The results show that high Mn/Fe ratio promotes the formation of Chinese script D-Fe and prevents the precipitate of Al m Fe and needle-like E-Fe. Only Mn/Fe ratio of 0.8 is demanded for the cRPSOHWHO\ FRQYHUVLRQ RI ȕ-Fe phase to Chinese script iron-rich intermetallics when the applied pressure is 75 MPa. The formation temperature increases for D-Fe but decreases for E-Fe with increasing the applied pressure. The full solidification sequence of the squeeze cast Al-5.0Cu-0.5Fe alloys with different Mn/Fe ratio has been established.
