Solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura with marked cystic degeneration: a case report

Abstract: Background Solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura (SFTP) is a mesenchymal tumor, and computed tomography typically shows SFTPs as well-defined lobulated masses. We herein report a case of SFTP with cystic degeneration of the entire tumor. Case presentation The patient was a 67-year-old Japanese man who was referred to our hospital for an abnormal shadow on a chest X-ray. Computed tomography showed a 9-cm cystic tumor in the lower left lobe, with small nodules aggregated i… Show more

“…To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of SFTPs with unilateral and multicentric. We also reported a rare case of atypical SFTP with cystic degeneration [ 17 ] and describe another rare case of SFTP with multiple, multicentric, and unilateral lesions in the present report. Based on these experiences, it seems that there is still uncharted territory in SFTP.…”

“…The cut surfaces are usually solid, firm, and tan-white to yellow in appearance with foci of hemorrhagic, cystic, or myxoid degeneration. Although cystic SFTs have been reported in the orbit and pleura, [10][11][12] a predominantly cystic SFT as a multiloculated and multicystic mass in the kidney has never been reported in the literature. Grossly, other cystic renal neoplasms such as clear cell renal cell carcinoma with cystic change, cystic nephroma, multilocular cystic renal neoplasm of low malignant potential, mixed epithelial and stromal tumor, tubulocystic carcinoma, and angiomyolipoma with epithelial cysts are considered as differentials.…”
