Solitary fibrous tumor of the liver. Case report and review of the literature

Abstract: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare mesenchymal tumor. Given its origin, it can appear in almost any location. In the literature, only 50 cases of SFT in the liver parenchyma have been reported. Despite its rarity, this entity should be included in the differential diagnosis of liver masses. We report the first case with imaging data from five years prior to diagnosis, which was treated by right portal embolization and arterial tumor embolization, and subsequent liver resection. We also present an exhaustiv… Show more

“…Findings on MRI are similar to that of CT scans. In T1WI, the SFTL demonstrates a heterogeneous mass with hypointense signals compared to the normal hepatic parenchyma which is thought to reflect the high content of collagenous tissue [39, 40]. A heterogeneous mass that may be both hypo- and hyperintense is observed in T2WI with some areas described as almost isointense to cerebrospinal fluid [18, 41].…”

“…Percutaneous biopsy for tissue diagnosis prior to resection is a much debated topic but is a well-documented approach in the lead up to the resection of SFTLs [3, 16, 18, 27, 28, 31, 40, 4347]. Given the many risks it poses—including seeding the tumour via the needle tract [4, 48], pain, intrahepatic or subcapsular haematoma and bile leaks [4]—it is doubtful whether preoperative biopsy would change management if the lesion is able to be safely resected [24].…”

“…So far, no specific laboratory markers have been suggested for the diagnosis of hepatic SFT. Based on MRI findings, hypointense signals with a heterogeneous mass, which may be observed along with calcification, indicate a high content of collagenous tissue in T1 weighted image, and heterogeneous masses including hypo or hyperintense or both of them in T2 weighted are observable in patients with SFT of the liver [18,19].…”

“…First described in the year 1931, SFT is a rare neoplasm primarily occurring in pleura. 1 , 3 Although it has been reported in other extrathoracic sites, the occurrence in liver is particularly rare. 1-3 Bejarano and colleagues have enlisted 51 cases of hepatic SFT.…”
