Solitary fibrous tumor of the breast: A case report and review of the literature

Abstract: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is an uncommon neoplasm of mesenchymal origin, which can be benign or malignant. Most SFTs develop from the pleura, but they can also be found in other sites. There are only few reports of SFT occurring in the breast. We herein report such a rare case. Sonography demonstrated an ovoid lesion mimicking a fibroadenoma, whereas color Doppler imaging showed marked internal vascularity. A brief literature review on imaging features of SFTs is added. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Clin… Show more

“…6 Elastography on the US is not hard. 3 Breast SFT can be shown as a relatively well-defined mass without calcifications on mammography, 9,19 and this lesion was radiologically classified under the BI-RADS category 3 18,19 or category 4. 2,10 While malignant SFTs often presented a focal lobulated appearance 3,6,21 and were often classified as BI-RADS 4C by radiologists.…”

“…1 To date, only 33 cases of breast SFT have been reported in the previous English literature, of which only 1 case was fat-forming SFT (summarized in Table 1). 228 Here, we report a case of breast fat-forming SFT with focal atypical features. We also reviewed the clinical features and diagnostic hallmarks of breast fat-forming SFT.…”

“…It has been known to occur most frequently in the pleural cavity, but it has also been described in other sites -such as the retroperitoneum, abdominal cavity, proximal extremity, and head and neckwhich could have occurred owing to the increased recognition of this entity (3). Among the extrapleural sites, SFTs in the breast have only been reported in 23 cases, which is rare (3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8)(9). Moreover, involvement of the male breast is rarer, and only a few cases have been reported (4,5).…”

“…Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT), an uncommon neoplasm that has been found most commonly in the pleura but may also arise at various extrapleural sites, including the head, neck, lung, abdomen, pelvis, and extremities was first described as a primary spindle-cell tumor of the pleura by Klemperer and Rabin in 1931 (1,2). SFT in the breast is very rare; only 23 cases have been reported in the medical literature (3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8)(9). Herein, we report a case of breast SFT in a 64-yearold man.…”

“…The onset of SFTs is insidious with no obvious symptoms at early stage. [2] As a result, the diagnosis is somewhat difficult to ascertain at an early stage. [3] For accurate results, the diagnosis of SFTs must always depend on histopathology.…”
