Solitary fibrous tumour of the sigmoid colon mesentery

Abstract: Solitary fibrous tumours (SFTs) are rare tumours arising from mesenchymal tissues. Despite of their more frequent occurrence in the pleura, SFT can present anywhere in the body. Only a few cases have been described arising from the mesentery. Most tumours have a benign nature; however, up to 20% of them can spread, most commonly to liver, lung and bone. Surgical excision including all surrounding tissues remains the treatment of choice; however, there is no consensus regarding the need for adjuvant therapies. … Show more

“…In the literature, a posterior approach (e.g., Kraske procedure) is classically described for the resection of retro- or pararectal tumors, especially in cases of tailgut cysts [ 5 , 30 , 36 ]. Alternatives are transabdominal, transvaginal, transrectal, or combined approaches [ 30 , 31 , 34 , 37 , 38 ]. Abdominoperineal resection or robotic-assisted resection has also been described [ 25 , 39 ].…”

“…IMT with epithelioid morphology is particularly aggressive and has been reclassified as epithelioid inflammatory myofibroblastic sarcoma. SFTs are exceedingly rare in the gastrointestinal tract [71][72][73][74][75][76][77][78][79][80][81][82]. Histologically, SFTs are usually hypercellular and consist of spindle cells arranged in a storiform pattern, hemangiopericytoma-like vascular pattern, and bands of hyalinized collagen [83].…”

“…Reports of SFTs originating in the bowel itself are rare, although a few cases of SFTs originating in the intestinal mesentery have been reported [ 7 , 15 , 16 ]. Liu et al describe a case in which an SFT surgically excised from the small bowel mesentery was found to be responsible for a chronic abdominal mass, but the patient did not experience obstructive symptoms [ 7 ].…”
