Soliton rains in a graphene-oxide passively mode-locked ytterbium-doped fiber laser with all-normal dispersion

Abstract: We experimentally investigated soliton rains in an ytterbium-doped fiber (YDF) laser with a net normal dispersion cavity using a graphene-oxide (GO) saturable absorber (SA). The 195 m-long-cavity, the fiber birefringence filter and the inserted 2.5 nm narrow bandwidth filter play important roles in the formation of the soliton rains. The soliton rain states can be changed by the effective gain bandwidth of the laser. The experimental results can be conducive to an understanding of dissipative soliton features … Show more

“…Despite operation in the anomalous dispersion regime provides the easiest access to multiple pulse formation required in the soliton rain dynamics, similar dynamics were observed with fiber ring lasers operated in the normal dispersion regime [33,46]. In addition, soliton rain has been reported in a figure-of-eight fiber laser [34].…”

“…Secondly, the long intra-cavity EDF and SMF could introduce large dispersion and nonlinearity, which can induce much richer phenomenon and generate pulses with various features. Rectangular-shape pulses, soliton rains and dissipative soliton resonant have been reported in fiber laser with a long cavity length 8 36 55 . Thirdly, fiber laser with long cavity length is generally sensitive to the environmental fluctuation, such as the temperatures, strains and vibrations.…”

“…Even with the pump power and the cavity firmly fixed, the intensities and the positions of the minor sub-pulses frequently fluctuated and randomly drifted between the adjacent major pulses. This multi-pulse phenomenon resembles the so-called soliton rain regime, which was firstly proposed and investigated in NPR-based Er-doped fibre lasers 27 28 , and also observed in Graphene-oxide mode-locked Yb-doped fibre laser 29 and NOLM-based Tm-doped fibre lasers 30 . Soliton rain consists of three key parts: the major condensed soliton phase (which corresponds to the major pulse in Fig.…”
