The solubilization of benzene and toluene in micellar solutions and the effects on the micellization and micelle size of ethylene oxide-propylene oxide triblock copolymers were investigated by dynamic light scattering (DLS), small angle neutron scattering (SANS), and 2D NMR spectroscopy. The copolymeric surfactants have the same size as the middle hydrophobic polypropylene oxide block (Mol. Wt. 3250) and varying polyethylene oxide end blocks (30, 40 and 50%). The solubilization and the properties of the micelles in the presence of the solubilizates were investigated; the results reveal that the more hydrophobic copolymer showed better solubilization. The cloud points of the copolymers decreased in the presence of oils; the depression in the cloud point is due to the formation of an electron donor-acceptor complex. DLS shows that the effect of benzene is dominated at high oil concentration. SANS data show that the micelles remain spherical in shape and that the micellar core size does not change with higher benzene concentration; observed changes in the low scattering vector region could be because of some small amount of benzene clusters formed at higher benzene concentration. Finally, the locus of solubilization of the oils in the copolymer micelles was determined via 2D NMR experiments. In all cases, significant nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy (NOESY) cross peaks were observed that appeared to correlate well with the expected loci of these solubilizates in micelles. Hence, the noninvasive NOESY technique provides important information on the location of the aromatic solubilizates in these copolymer micelles that depends on the structure of the oils.

Reports of random copolymers capable of solubilising hydrophobic oils are rare. This is primarily because random copolymers are unlikely to self-assemble into suitable aggregates (or micelles) in water. A random copolymer with a "blocky" (or lumpy) microstructure may have potential to solubilise hydrophobic oils in water. This type of polymer would have advantages over block copolymers which are more laborious and costly to synthesise.Experiments. The solubilising capacity of a blocky random copolymer, namely poly(methyl methacrylate-co-2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PMMA--co-PDMAEMA) is assessed by UV-visible spectroscopy and compared with common reference surfactants. The relative solubilising performance of random copolymers (across a narrow range of DMAEMA mol % fraction) for aromatic and aliphatic oils was also studied. The morphology of the aggregates was monitored as a function of the solubilisation capacity by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and dynamic-light scattering (DLS).Findings. Similarly to well-defined block copolymers, these random copolymers have a specific preference for solubilising aromatic over aliphatic oils. Increasing hydrophobicity of the copolymer enhances the solubilisation capacity. SANS has highlighted that aggregates become swollen and more uniform/spherical with increasing concentration of aromatic solubilisate, and that the aromatic solubilisate partitions throughout the random copolymer aggregates.

The partition of a series of substituted phenols between water and polymer micelles formed by Pluronic F-68 and F-127 has been studied. The formation of micelles by these block copolymers has been evidenced by steady-state fluorescence and dynamic light scattering. The data show that micelles and larger aggregates are formed above the critical micelle concentration. In presence of p-alkylphenols a micelle rearrangement occurs that leads to the formation of just one and large aggregate. This effect depends both on polymer and phenols structures. The partition coefficients and the standard free energies of transfer from the aqueous to the micellar phases were determined. The incremental free energy for a methylene group are 2.88 kJ mol -1 and 1.65 kJ mol -1 for F-127 and F-68, respectively. This difference is explained in terms of the core sizes that are determined by the length of the PPO block.
