Soluble and cell surface ICAM-3 in blood and cerebrospinal fluid of patients with multiple sclerosis: influence of methylprednisolone treatment and relevance as markers for disease activity

Abstract: The increase of ICAM-3 levels might indicate the anti-inflammatory effect of the MP treatment. It could be interesting to search for similar effects investigating the new immune modulatoring therapy forms of MS.

“…In an earlier study we showed an inverse correlation of expression levels of cell surface bound AMs on peripheral blood MNC with both total number and cumulative area of all brain MRI lesions as well as with the disease duration [20]. Furthermore, we found a decrease of cICAM-1 and cICAM-3 expression levels on T cells and monocytes in CSF and blood in MS patients suffering a relapse [22,23]. In a short-term longitudinal study we also detected a further decrease of cICAM-1 expression on peripheral blood T cells in patients who suffered two relapses within the three months of observation time [23].…”

“…We also observed an inverse correlation between cICAM-1 on peripheral MNC and parameters for disease severity in brain MRI of MS patients [19]. Moreover, we found changes in the expression of cell surface bound as well as soluble ICAM-1 and ICAM-3 that might reflect the anti-inflammatory effect of high-dose methylprednisolone treatment in MS [22,24].…”

“…Against this background, we investigated whether cell surface bound AM could fulfill the criteria of objective parameters for disease activity, severity, and diagnosis in MS. Therefore, we determined the expression of cICAM-1 and cICAM-3 on MNC subsets and the percentage of CD45RA+ ICAM-3+ lymphocytes in CSF and blood of different groups of MS patients and controls in several studies [34][35][36].…”
