“…Reducing TC, TG, and LDL‐C and increasing HDL‐C levels are strategies for both main and secondary CVD protection (Zodda et al, 2018). Consequently, many studies have been conducted in order to investigate alternative and complementary therapies in this field (Bahari, Taheri, Rashidmayvan, Hezaveh, et al, 2023; Ghavami et al, 2023; Mohammadi et al, 2021; Nattagh‐Eshtivani, Pahlavani, et al, 2022; Salehi‐Sahlabadi et al, 2020). The aim of the present research was to gather the results of randomized controlled studies on the effectiveness of sumac supplementation on lipid levels.…”

“…All data were reported as mean differences with Standard Deviation (SD). Hozo et al (2005) method and the SD calculation formula (Standard Error of Mean [SEM]) (Ghavami et al, 2023) were used to calculate the mean and SD, respectively, if data were published in median and range (or 95% CI) or SEM. I ‐square ( I 2 ) test and subgroup analysis, including intervention duration <12 versus ≥12 weeks, intervention dose of <3 versus ≥3 gm per day, and gender (male, female, and both), was performed to determine between‐study heterogeneity.…”

“…The main limitation is that each treatment phase was only three weeks, so the study cannot provide information about the persistence of the effect over longer periods, as well as adherence to daily consumption of the quantities consumed. However, prior studies with viscous dietary fibers have shown that the cholesterol-lowering effect persists over longer periods ( 11 , 13 ).…”

“…One type of dietary intervention that has been found to lower the LDL-C concentration is consumption of foods or supplements containing viscous dietary fibers. The primary proposed mechanism for the cholesterol-lowering effects of viscous fibers is trapping of bile acids and cholesterol, which reduces absorption and reabsorption of these substances ( 11 - 13 ). Reduced absorption results in lower levels of cholesterol and bile acids in hepatocytes, triggering up-regulation of hepatic LDL receptors that remove apolipoprotein B-containing lipoproteins, including LDL particles, from the blood, thus lowering the circulating level of LDL-C ( 10 , 14 ).…”
