Solution-collapse breccia pipes of Spanish Valley, southeastern Utah

Abstract: More than 70 breccia pipes lie along northwesterly trends near Spanish valley in Grand and San Juan Counties, a few kilometers southeast of Moab, Utah. The structures generally are roughly oval in plan and only several tens of meters in diameter, but are inferred to extend downward about 1,000 m. The pipes contain a breccia that has been dropped as much as several hundreds of meters by solution collapse. Much sandstone in the breccia has been decemented and in places has flowed, as shown by foliation and sands… Show more

“…One of the most plausible explanations for pipe‐like masses of sandstone at many sites in the Colorado Plateau involves solution‐collapse (Weir et al ., 1961; Barrington & Kerr, 1963; Schlee, 1963; Wenrich, 1985; Hunter et al ., 1992). Solution‐collapse begins with the formation of an underground cavity in soluble rock, into which the overlying sediment or rock collapses, which explains the slumping and faulting observed in those pipes.…”

“…Moreover, numerous breccia pipe collapse features a t t r i b u t e d t o a dissolutioning-stoping mechanism have been i d e n t i f i e d i n the Spanish Valley (Sugiura and Kitcho, 1981;Weir e t al., 1961). Such breccia has been mapped about 8 km (5 miles) from the s i t e a t Arches N.P.…”
