Solution‐focused Therapy in a Psychiatric Hospital

Abstract: This paper presents the authors' use of solution‐focused brief therpay in an adult inpatient psychiatric hospital setting. we suggest that a theoretical inteeegration of the medical model and the solution‐focused approach provides a useful treatment modality. We discuss implementation of the model, emphasizing assessment, treatment milieu, the role of staff, therapy, and discharge issues. We also describe the model's usefulness for training and supervision and offer recommendations for future research.

“…Spiritual ecomaps can also be used as an intervention to demonstrate to the family how their existential situation has changed since the start of therapy. A key tenet of solution-focused perspectives is the necessity of reinforcing the perception that change is occurring (Kok & Leskela, 1996). “…These findings suggest that relational treatment combined with medication is associated with the greatest amount of positive change. Superior efficacy of therapy plus psychotropic intervention relative to that of psychotropic treatment alone has previously been documented (Brock & Barnard, 1999;Kok & Leskela, 1996;Reamy-Stephenson, 1994;Wager & Zammit, 1995).…”
