Solvate Ionic Liquids as Reaction Media for Electrocyclic Transformations

Abstract: Solvate ionic liquids (SILs) consisting of lithium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide dissolved in tri-or tetraglyme have recently emerged as a novel class of ionic liquids. Herein, the first use of solvate ionic liquids as a replacement for molecular solvents in electrocyclization reactions is reported. The SILs promoted both Diels-Alder and [2+2] cycloaddition reactions,

“…The Gutmann acceptor number, based on the 31 P chemical shift of triphenylphosphine oxide, has recently been reported to be 26.5 for both numbers of [Li(G3)] NTF 2 and [Li(G4)] NTF 2 , compared with 0.2 for the glymes alone . In fact, both SILs were concluded to be more acidic than the conventional IL [C 4 C 1 im] NTf 2 .…”

“…While the structure and properties of pure SILs has received some attention, the behaviour of SILs as solvents is relatively unexplored except for our recent study of polyethylene‐oxide–SIL solutions . The first use of SILs as solvents for Diels–Alder and cycloaddition reactions has recently been reported . Determining the polarity is an important step towards understanding dissolution and reactivity in SILs, and therefore their potential beyond electrolytes.…”

“…The typical sample masses were approximately 8 mg, which were sealed in aluminum hermetic pans. Preparation of dimethyl 4-methylcyclohexa-1,4-diene-1,2-dicarboxylate (11) [37]. Following the procedure of Smit et al [28] a mixture of dimethylacetylene dicarboxylate (3.468 g, 24.40 mmol), isoprene (14.7 mL, 146 mmol), and activated silica gel (40.13 g) was stirred at room temperature for 18 h. The reaction flask was equipped with a Findenser™ to minimize the evaporation of isoprene.…”

“…38 Moreover, one may introduce a new functionality into the solvate ILs to form, for example, stimuli-responsible ILs by designing the components of the complexes. Of course, the application of the solvate ILs is not limited to electrochemical devices, but they have already been tested as reaction media for organic synthesis 39 and as the media for CO 2 capture. 40 The significant material design flexibility for solvate ILs provides infinite possibilities.…”
