Solvent Extraction and Fluorescence Spectroscopic Investigation of the Selective Am(III) Complexation with TS-BTPhen

Abstract: An americium(III) selective separation procedure was developed based on the co-extraction of trivalent actinides (An(III)) and lanthanides (Ln(III)) by TODGA (N,N,N',N'-tetraoctyldiglycolamide), followed by Am(III) selective stripping using the hydrophilic complexing agent 3',3'',2,5,6,tetrayl]tetrabenzenesulfonic acid). Distribution ratios were found at an acidity of 0.65 mol L -1 nitric acid that allowed for the separation of Am(III) from Cm(III) (D Cm > 1, D Am < 1), giving a separation factor between curiu… Show more

“…This principle was further developed and improved mainly in the USA, 13,14,15 France 16,17 and Japan. 18 BTP, 19,20 BTBP 21,22,23 and BTPhen 24,25 made hydrophylic by sulfonation (i.e. R = 3sulfophenyl, see Figure 1) proved to be efficient and highly selective ligands for stripping An(III) from an organic phase loaded with An(III) and Ln(III) by means of N,N,N',N'-tetra-noctyl diglycolamide (TODGA, Figure 1) as an extracting agent.…”

“…The AmSel process separates Am(III) from Cm(III) and Ln(III) by stripping only Am(III) from a TODGA solvent containing Am(III), Cm(III) and Ln(III). A subtle selectivity of TODGA for Cm(III) over Am(III) (SFCm(III)/Am(III) ≈ 1.6) in conjunction with the similar subtle selectivity for Am(III) over Cm(III) by hydrophilic SO3-Ph-BTBP/BTPhen (SFAm(III)/Cm(III) ≈ 1.6) is exploited 16,18,19 2 | J. “…Details of the equipment, procedure, and analytics are described elsewhere. [25][26][27] Distribution ratios were calculated as the radioactivity or concentration of the metal ion in the organic phase divided by the respective radioactivity or concentration in the aqueous phase.…”
