Solvent Extraction of Zirconium (IV) from Thiocyanate and Hydrochloric Acid Solutions by LIX 26 and DOSO

Abstract: Solvent extraction of zirconium (IV) from dil. HCl media by 5% (v/v) LIX 26 result in maximum extraction at 1 M HCl. Presence of thiocyanate ions greatly increase the extent of extraction from dil. HCl solutions. Synergism has been observed in the extraction of this metal ion by mixture of LIX 26 and dioctyl sulphoxide (DOSO) from both dil. HCl solutions and thiocyanate media. The plot of logD vs. log [DOSO] for the extraction of zirconium(IV) from 0.5 M HCl indicates the species extracted to be monosolvate i… Show more

“…Manganese complexes exhibit biological interest showing antibacterial [7], anticancer [8] and antifungal [9] activity. 8-hq and its derivatives are well-known molecules because of their ability for the complexation of many primary transition and rare-earth metal ions [10] and are used as the emitting elements in electroluminescent devices [11]. In medicinal field, 8-hq derivatives can be used as insecticides, antibacterial, fungicidal, neuroprotective and anti-HIV agents.…”

“…8-Hydroxy quinoline is also a well-known monoprotic bidentate chelating agent which is able to combine with many primary, transition and rare-earth metal ions [9][10][11] . 8-Hydroxyquinoline and its derivatives exhibit substantial cytotoxic activity against cancer cells [12][13][14][15] .…”

“…It is of interest, therefore, to study extraction of zirconium(IV) by LIX 54 (a phenyl alkyl ß-diketone) from thiocyanate solutions of moderate acidity in order to avoid polymerization, in the higher pH range [12], which hinders extraction. Some reports have been made on the extraction from thiocyanate media by oxines (can be considered to be behaving similar to /J-diketones) and their mixtures with neutral donors which show considerable synergism [13,14], Studies on extraction of zirconium(IV) from acidic thiocyanate solutions by LIX 26 and its mixtures with dioctyl sulphoxide (DOSO), a neutral donor have been reported recently [15], Therefore, the phenomenon of synergism or antagonism in the extraction need be investigated with mixtures of LIX 54 and TBP. Effective separation of 95 Zr is of practical significance because of the radiochemical equilibrium 95 Zr-95 Nb for which studies on separation of 95 Zr-95 Nb by LIX 54 from the same medium have been undertaken.…”
