Solvothermal synthesis and characterization of acicular α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles

Abstract: Nanometer-sized α-Fe 2 O 3 particles have been prepared by a simple solvothermal method using ferric acetylacetonate as a precursor. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDAX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transition electron microscopy (TEM), infrared spectroscopy (IR) and thermal analysis (TG-DTA). XRD indicates that the product is single-phase α-Fe 2 O 3 with rhombohedral structure. Bundles of acicul… Show more

“…4 indicated presence of absoption bands at 3354, 2359, 1621, 1033, 920 and 602 cm -1 . These observed bands may be due to O-H stretching (3354 cm -1 ), C-O bending (2359 cm -1 ), N-H stretching and bending (1621 cm -1 ), C-H stretch ing (1033 cm -1 ), vibrations [8,9] and vibrations of Fe-O bond (602 cm -1 ) which is in agreement with the lit erature values [10,11].…”

“…Several physical and chemical production methods including mechanical milling (Karimi et al 2014), sodium borohydride (Satapanajaru et al 2008;Madhavi et al 2014), ethylene glycol (Raveendran et al 2003), solvothermal method (Basavaraju et al 2011), and carbothermal synthesis (Allabaksh et al 2010) have been employed for the preparation of ZVIN. But ZVIN, synthesized by above conventional methods, agglomerate rapidly in clusters due to Van der Waals and magnetic forces (Qiangu et al 2013).…”

“…The XRD pattern of the ligand (HL) has many sharp diffraction peaks at around 2θ = 10-15°and 2θ = 20-25°this indicates that HL is a polycrystalline phase. The average crystallite size (ξ) can be calculated from the XRD pattern according to Debye-Scherrer equation [24,25]:…”
