Powders of REMO 4 (RE: rare earth, M: Nb and Ta) were synthesized by a coprecipitation method employing watersoluble peroxo Nb/Ta complexes. This peroxo-based method is an aqueous solution route free from organics and halides. REMO 4 was directly crystallized by annealing the precursor under moderate conditions. It has been revealed that the precursors are also useful for synthesis of oxynitrides under mild nitriding conditions. Synthesis methods and/or routes often affect properties of functional materials due to alterations of morphology/size of particles and improvement of homogeneity.1 Therefore, development of new synthetic routes is an important subject. Solution-based methods, such as coprecipitation, solvothermal (including hydrothermal), solgel, and polymerizable complex (PC) methods, are frequently used for synthesis of complex oxide powders because of advantages in homogeneous mixing of constituent elements and control of morphology. 29 The precursors with high homogeneity of constituent elements allow the low-temperature synthesis of materials, resulting in fine particles. 2,5,6 Use of water as a solvent is desired in the solutionbased methods from the viewpoints of low environmental impacts and a wide variety of synthetic methods. However, the low stability of metal ions such as Ti, Nb, and Ta in water, which are important elements in many functional materials, causes difficulties in use of water for synthesis of materials. Developments of their water-soluble metalorganic complexes have brought breakthrough in aqueous solution-based synthesis.
1013Although the PC method is useful for synthesis of many complex oxides, the pyrolysis process to obtain inorganic compounds from resin-like gel is a drawback of this method. Heating at higher than 773 K is usually required to burn out organics during the pyrolysis. Therefore, synthesis of low temperature polymorphs by the PC method is sometimes difficult.Peroxo-metal complexes are also water-soluble species and they can be applied to synthesis of complex oxides. Camargo et al. established a peroxo-based method called oxidant peroxo (OP) method for lead titanate and related materials.
1416Oxidation of Pb 2+ ions to PbO 2 by peroxo groups is a key reaction for precursor formation in the OP method. This mechanism limits the application of the OP method only to lead-contained materials. Devillers et al. reported synthesis of yttrium niobates by a freeze-drying method employing a solution containing Y-EDTA (EDTA: ethylenediaminetetraacetate) complex and guanidium salt of peroxo-EDTA complex of Nb.17 Use of peroxo-complex achieves the aqueous methods, however organics are still used in this method. Dey et al.reported a peroxo route for synthesis of alkali niobates. 18,19 However, this method would be difficult to apply with other niobates/tantalates. Herein, we report a new peroxo-based route employing water-soluble tetraperoxo Nb/Ta complexes for synthesis of rare earth niobates and tantalates.Crystals Figure S1).
