SOM/SEM based Characterization of Internal Delaminations of CFRP Samples Machined by AWJM

Abstract: Linear Abrasive WaterJet Machining (AWJM) tests have been performed on Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) in order to have a first reference of the main defects developed onto the machined surface. Delamination has been proved as one of the most critical defects when machining composites or layered materials. In this work this defect and the influence of cutting parameters in its formation have been studied. For this purpose, delamination morphology has been characterized using Scanning Optical Microscope … Show more

“…Delamination is a major concern with FRP laminate that occurs majorly at jet entry and exit due to the initiation of the shock wave by the high-velocity jet, as shown in Fig. 5, which is the major reason for the rejection of parts by the aircraft industry [41]. Design of experiment (DOE) is a useful technique to study the experimentation method in industries processes.…”

“…Also, they were converted into three different levels (-1, 0, 1) that represent minimum, central, and maximum values, respectively (Table 2). In order to establish a stand-off distance in accordance with the results of other authors [20,28,29], 2.5 mm was the stand-off distance used in all the tests. Figure 2 shows the distribution of 20 test.…”

“…This is mainly due to a loss of kinetic energy in the form of dispersion of the jet when leaving the focusing tube. Most studies indicate that a recommended distance is usually 2-3 mm [20,28,29].…”

“…The images show the influence of the opening of the jet at the entrance of the material producing an increase in the width of kerf. This phenomenon is related to damages produced in the IDR zone [23]. In order to obtain a more detailed microscopic analysis of the samples, images have been taken using SEM microscopy.…”

“…Finally, the state of the cuts has been evaluated through the use of microscopic inspection techniques and macro and microgeometric deviations. feed capacity (TFR), due to the influence analyzed in [23]. The separation distance has been kept constant at 3 mm throughout the experimental phase and the abrasive selected is garnet with an average particle size of 80 µm in order to optimize aluminium penetration [24].…”
