Somatic symptoms as a marker for severity in adolescent depression

Abstract: This study demonstrates that somatic symptoms are common in adolescent depression. Multiple somatic symptoms within depression imply a higher severity in terms of duration, depth and psychiatric comorbidity. The strong correlation with suicidal plans, suicidal attempts and disruptive behaviour is concerning.

“…Children and adolescents with psychological disorders, such as anxiety and post-traumatic stress, may report somatic symptoms (Dhossche et al, 2001; Ginsburg et al, 2006; Hughes et al, 2008; Janssens et al, 2010; Terwogt et al, 2006). This is also true for individuals with depressive disorders (Bohman et al, 2010; Janssens et al, 2010; Terwogt et al, 2006; Williams et al, 2002). Familial issues that are associated with reports of somatic symptoms such as poor parent and child communication, parental rejection, hostility, unreasonable parent expectations, parental history of psychopathology and substance abuse may also be associated with increased stress and increased somatic symptoms (Bursch et al, 2008; Garralda, 2010; Riggs et al 2007).…”

“…Many studies have investigated factors associated with suicide in MDD patients, such as psychiatric comorbidities,67 genetic factors,89 melancholic features of MDD,1011 biomarkers,12 and environmental factors 13. Although some studies suggested that somatic symptoms are related to suicide,1415 gender differences regarding somatic symptoms and suicide are still poorly understood in MDD patients.…”

“…Some research suggest that the cognitive-affective and somatic symptoms of depression can have a differing impact on propensity for suicidal ideation (Bohman, Jansson, Van Knorring, Päären, & Olsson,2010). However, more such information is needed, particularly if it is to inform interventions.…”
