Somatostatin receptors as a new active targeting sites for nanoparticles

Abstract: The delivery of nanoparticles through receptor-mediated cell interactions has nowadays a major attention in the area of drug targeting applications. This specific kind of targeting is mediated by localized receptors impeded into the target site with subsequent drugs internalization. Hence, this type of interaction would diminish side effects and enhance drug delivery efficacy to the target site. Somatostatin receptors (SSTRs) are one type of G protein-coupled receptors, which could be active targeted for vario… Show more

“…The possible uses of anticoagulation in COVID-19 could be of attention, such as anticoagulants heparin can be conjugated to NPs potentially as anti-viral activities against COVID-19 [ 116 ]. Moreover, NPs can transport anticoagulants to specific cells which offer controlled-release therapy [ 108 ]. These anticoagulant drugs can be inhaled, absorbed through the skin transdermal, and or injected.…”

“…A high variety of physiological functions are regulated by this hormone; furthermore, it presents inhibitory effects on the secretion of other hormones. The function of somatostatin is mediated by SSTR, a type of G-protein-coupled receptor [ 49 ]. These receptors are physiologically expressed in healthy tissues and organs such as the central and peripheral nervous system, pancreas and gastrointestinal tract, salivary glands and vessels, stimulating cell proliferation as well.…”

“…Ligands used for targeting purposes need to have substantially high affinity and specificity for the receptor of interest, and relatively simple conjugation chemistry. For instance, abundant expression of transferrin receptors [ 364 ], folate receptors [ 365 ], lactoferrin receptors [ 366 ], low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptors [ 367 ], interleukin receptors [ 368 ], somatostatin receptors [ 369 ], and lectin receptors (see under glycans) [ 329 ] on various potential targets such as the cancer cells, BBB, and inflammation sites have rendered their respective ligands attractive targeting moieties. Compared to affinity molecules, the lure of such natural ligands lies mainly within their prevalence, stability, inexpensiveness, and low immunogenicity.…”
