Introduction and objectives (1): It is currently important to be able to establish logical plans for physical work and/or nutrition aimed at achieving optimal levels of performance and wellbeing. To achieve this, it is crucial to understand anthropometric data and how they relate to body type and, above all, how they associate with parameters linked to health. The present study, therefore, proposed to examine intersexual morphological differences and to determine the existing relationship between somatotype and BMI in a sample of school sports players from Huacho (Peru). Material and methods (2): A descriptive, comparative, correlational, and transversal study was delivered within a sample of 294 students (165 males and 129 females). Participants were aged between 12–16 years and regularly participated in team sports at competitive school level. All participants took part in the anthropometric examination in order to determine their somatotype and body mass index (BMI). Results (3): Significant differences were found to exist between the sexes in practically all of the anthropometric measures. The data demonstrated a high index of overweight and obesity. Further, the zones of occupation of the somatochart for both populations showed a displacement towards endomorphism, and that the level of typological similarity between populations was 30.54%. Conclusions (4): Results indicate a serious need for training so that adolescent students acquire healthy habits and lifestyles.

The impact of skinfolds measurement on somatotype determination in Heath-Carter method

Objectives The study aim was to determine if a difference exists in skinfold thickness measured by two interchangeable approaches; (1) supraspinale skinfold recommended in the Heath-Carter method and (2) iliac crest skinfold measurement. The question arises as to whether each approach has a similar or different effect on endomorphy determination, and whether there is a possibility to estimate the supraspinale skinfold based on other skinfold measurements. Methods A group of 186 male and 161 female students participated in this study. Anthropometric examination included all somatic measurements, as recommended in the Heath-Carter protocol, and the iliac crest skinfold measurement. Estimation of the supraspinale skinfold was performed based on the multiple linear regression procedure. Results Skinfold thickness measured in the supraspinale and iliac crest differed (p<0.001) in both men (5.41±1.65 mm and 9.55±4.05 mm, respectively) and women (8.87±4.08 mm and 15.20±6.85 mm), respectively. Endomorphy was significantly higher (0.46 in men, 0.63 in women) when the iliac crest skinfold was used. Subscapular skinfold and iliac crest skinfolds were included in the linear regression model for supraspinale skinfold estimation (R 2 = 0.724, SE = 0.9 mm and R 2 = 0.947, SE = 2.3 mm for men and women, respectively). Conclusion Two common skinfold approaches produced different measurements between the supraspinale and iliac crest skinfolds, which subsequently affected estimated endomorphy. Regression equations for supraspinale skinfold enabled correction of endomorphy in the case of improperly applied measurement (i.e. iliac crest) and thus, could allow for uniform somatotype estimation according to Carter and Heath approach.

Se analizó la prevalencia de obesidad general y abdominal (OA) en adolescentes escolares, con diferente proporción corporal, de la ciudad de Córdoba, Argentina. Este es un estudio transversal en el que se incluyeron 614 adolescentes (11-18 años, edad media 13,9±2,1; 51,8% niñas). Se obtuvieron datos de tres establecimientos secundarios públicos de la ciudad de Córdoba durante los años 2007-2014. La proporción corporal se estimó mediante el índice córmico (IC=talla sentado/talla total x 100), y se obtuvieron valores Z estandarizados según sexo y edad, y cuartiles (Q1-4) de estos valores. Los niveles de sobrepeso y obesidad general se calcularon en base al índice de masa corporal [IMC=peso(kg)/talla(m)2], siguiendo las referencias de la Organización Mundial de la Salud, y se obtuvieron valores Z por sexo y edad. La OA se determinó mediante el índice cintura-talla (ICT=perímetro de la cintura/talla); se definió OA cuando ICT≥0,5. En general, se observó que, comparados con individuos con IC menor, aquellos con IC más altos (con piernas relativamente más cortas) presentan valores Z medios mayores de IMC e ICT, junto con una mayor prevalencia de sobrepeso, obesidad general y OA. Este patrón fue estadísticamente significativo en las niñas, mientras que entre los niños también se observó, aunque menos marcadamente y sin alcanzar una significación estadística. Considerando los efectos adversos de la obesidad en la salud inmediata y en el futuro de los adolescentes, los individuos con niveles elevados de IC deberían ser especialmente monitoreados en estudios nutricionales y de crecimiento.
